I’m so excited for Season 3 of House of the Dragon! It’s coming up soon, and while most of our favorites like Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra), Olivia Cooke (Alicent), and Matt Smith (Daemon) are returning, the new cast members have me thinking about what’s in store for the Targaryens. Tommy Flanagan joining as Roderick Dustin and James Norton as Ormund Hightower definitely hints at some big changes and new storylines!
According to the website Redanian Intelligence (though HBO hasn’t officially confirmed this), Pearl Clark is joining the cast. She’ll reportedly play Jaehaera Targaryen, the daughter of King Aegon II and Queen Helaena. Jaehaera has made a few appearances in House of the Dragon, including the memorable ‘Blood and Cheese’ scene in Season 2, Episode 1, where her brother Jaehaerys was killed.
What The Jaehaera Targaryen Casting Means For House Of The Dragon Season 3

Jaehaera was previously played by Lulu Barker, who was four years old during Season 2, which made sense since her character is a toddler. However, the new actor playing Jaehaera is ten years old, and that’s led to confusion about the show’s timeline. Season 3 begins right after Season 2 ended, with the Battle of the Gullet looming, meaning only a few days or weeks have passed, not years. This age difference has understandably sparked questions about how the show is handling the passage of time.
According to Redanian Intelligence, Season 3 of the show will once again feature a toddler as Princess Jaehaera. This time, however, there will be two actresses portraying her: one as a toddler, continuing the storyline from Season 2, and another as a slightly older child, around 10 years old. This suggests the show won’t jump ahead in time right away, though a time jump could still happen later in the season.
The show has jumped forward in time significantly before, so it’s not unheard of. However, changing the timeline this much would be a major departure from the book. The events in ‘The Dance of the Dragons’ happen over just a few years, and adding a six or seven-year gap would have big consequences for pretty much the entire story.
It’s possible this is part of the plan, but the massive changes it would require make that seem improbable. A more likely explanation is that what we’re seeing is a vision or dream sequence. This fits with what’s been established with Jaehaera’s mother, Helaena, who has become increasingly dreamlike in the show and has already had several prophetic moments. This seems to be the direction the story is heading, but explaining why involves major spoilers from the book the show is based on, Fire & Blood. Highlight the text below to reveal those spoilers:
In Fire & Blood, Helaena dies by suicide during the civil war, deeply affected by the trauma of being forced to choose which of her sons, Jaehaerys and Maelor, would be spared by assassins known as Blood and Cheese. Jaehaerys was killed, and Maelor soon after, leading Helaena to jump from a window to her death. Years later, Jaehaera, betrothed to the new king Aegon III, also dies by suicide in the same manner at the age of ten. Considering the young age of the actress portraying Jaehaera and the fact that Maelor’s story is left out, it seems likely that Helaena will have a premonition of Jaehaera’s death, and this vision will contribute to her own tragic end.
Season 3 will likely take Jaehaera’s storyline in a different direction than the books, which may not please all viewers. However, Helaena’s visions have been compelling so far, and hopefully the show can successfully integrate the new actress playing Jaehaera.
The third season of House of the Dragon will premiere in June on both HBO and Max. You can currently stream the first two seasons.
