The trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 hints at large-scale battles as the fight for the Iron Throne intensifies, and suggests a significant character death from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the new season after the dramatic cliffhanger ending of Season 2, which set the stage for the massive naval Battle of the Gullet and Rhaenyra Targaryen’s attempt to claim King’s Landing, while Alicent Hightower vowed to help her do so.
Heads up: This article contains significant spoilers from the book Fire & Blood, and by extension, likely spoilers for the House of the Dragon TV series. If you don’t want to know key plot points, please don’t read further.
The latest trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 heavily features both naval warfare and political intrigue. It shows the Velaryon fleet clashing with the Triarchy, with intense ship battles and dragons joining the fight. The trailer’s dialogue mainly revolves around a promise made by Alicent, questions about her trustworthiness, and Rhaenyra’s next moves.
As a movie and TV fanatic, I’ve noticed these things are all connected. What happens with one will definitely affect the others, and it’s going to play a huge role in one of the most shocking deaths of the season, I just know it!
How Jacaerys Velaryon Dies In House Of The Dragon

A standout moment from the trailer shows Jacaerys Velaryon and his dragon, Vermax, entering the Battle of the Gullet. This is a significant development for Jace’s character, as he hasn’t been prominently featured in action sequences until now, and it’s a change fans will likely appreciate. The scene is directly adapted from George R.R. Martin’s book, where Jace and other dragonriders participate in the battle.
Jace and the dragons dealt a major blow to the Triarchy’s fleet, proving too powerful to stop. However, the battle wasn’t without loss. Vermax crashed into the ocean, and accounts of what happened vary. Some say she was hit by a crossbow bolt, while others believe a sailor snagged her scales with a grappling hook, causing her to become tangled in the ship’s rigging and go down with it.
Jace doesn’t die during the jump from the dragon, but he falls to his death shortly after. He’s immediately targeted by crossbowmen, and ultimately killed by a bolt to the neck, causing him to drown, as Martin describes: “Jace was swallowed by the sea.”
House Of The Dragon Adds A New Character To The Battle Of The Gullet

In the book, Jace is one of several dragonriders present in the battle, which also includes:
- Addam of Hull on Seasmoke
- Ulf the White on Silverwing
- Hugh Hammer on Vermithor
- Nettles on Sheepstealer
We’re not sure if the first three characters will appear, but the fourth one won’t. It seems Nettles was removed from House of the Dragon in Season 2, and Rhaena Targaryen now has Sheepstealer instead. Since she’s still located in the Vale, it doesn’t make much sense for her to unexpectedly show up at the Battle of the Gullet.
The trailer actually shows Baela Targaryen and her dragon, Moondancer, will be in this scene. If Nettles isn’t appearing, this is a welcome switch.
Because Baela is engaged to Jacaerys, his death will likely be especially heartbreaking for her, and I anticipate a very powerful emotional response. This development also gives her character a more significant role, as she and Rhaena haven’t been prominently featured enough in the story so far.
House Of The Dragon Probably Has To Change Another Part Of The Battle Of The Gullet

The upcoming Battle of the Gullet probably won’t follow the book exactly, and it’s uncertain how much Rhaenyra’s youngest sons, Aegon and Viserys, will be involved. In the book, they were traveling by ship to Pentos when they encountered a fleet from the Triarchy. Viserys was captured, but Aegon escaped on his dragon, Stormcloud, and returned to Dragonstone, prompting Jace and others to intervene.
Considering what happened in Season 2 – with the young dragons and quickly escalating conflict – this storyline might need a major revision. While keeping the idea of characters being captured, a new motivation for Jace and his group to participate in the battle would be necessary, unless the show alters the established timeline or how quickly the dragons are growing. Aside from that, the Battle of the Gullet appears to be the impressive event fans are expecting, and promises to be a fantastic start to Season 3 of House of the Dragon.
House of the Dragon Season 3 begins in June on HBO and HBO Max.
