House of the Dragon Season 3 Will Bring Back 7 Key Targaryens (Confirmed)

As a devoted movie critic, I eagerly anticipate stepping back into the captivating world of Westeros when “House of the Dragon” resumes for its Season 3 installment. Fans of the epic saga can rejoice at the reappearance of several notable Targaryen family members, as they navigate a tumultuous era of internal conflict within their royal dynasty. Set approximately two centuries prior to the events unfolding in “Game of Thrones,” HBO’s prequel series immerses us in a period of civil war, as the once-united Targaryen family fractures into opposing factions – the Greens and Blacks – each vying for control of the coveted Iron Throne.

For the third season of “House of the Dragon,” a popular series, many well-liked actors have been brought together to portray new characters from the Targaryen dynasty, who have won hearts over two seasons. As production on the new season is underway, it’s official that several actors will reprise their roles, as confirmed through table reads and casting updates. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of these silver-haired family members.

House of the Dragon Season 3‘s Confirmed Targaryen Cast Members

Daemon Targaryen

Matt Smith’s character, Daemon Targaryen, has been an unpredictable element in the series House of the Dragon. Plagued by his proximity to the throne, Daemon frequently expresses his turmoil through combat, transforming into a formidable warrior on his mount, Caraxes.

In the season finale, Daemon, who had largely separated from his wife Rhaenyra during Season 2, renewed his loyalty to her. The pair then readied their amassed forces for an impending war. With Season 3 on the horizon, it’s expected that there will be more excitement for Daemon, and perhaps the long-awaited confrontation between the Targaryen Prince and his nephew Aemond, a tension that has been building over the course of two seasons, may finally come to fruition.

Rhaenyra Targaryen

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: In the epic saga of Westeros, I, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), was the rightful heir to King Viserys and the leader of the Blacks, destined to sit on the Iron Throne. However, my birthright was cruelly snatched away by my half-brother, leaving me determined to make history as the first woman to claim the throne. Throughout Season 2, I’ve been amassing loyal soldiers, and in Season 3, I’ll finally be ready to lead my army against the Greens. The outcome of this battle will decide whether I triumphantly reclaim what was mine by birth or continue my quest for justice.

Emma D’Arcy revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Rhaenyra finds herself in a position of power for the first time, which presents her with “a completely novel set of circumstances.” The actor also expressed an interest in exploring how uncompromising Rhaenyra can become, especially as she embraces the fervor associated with her name.

In the concluding episodes of the second season, it seems to me that we encounter a character who, for the first time, faces a crucial decision concerning her future…And it appears that at this juncture, she begins to gravitate towards her faith, drawing upon the rich historical heritage of her family. Her actions suggest an almost fanatical devotion as she embraces her own identity.

Rhaena Targaryen

Phoebe Campbell portrays Rhaena Targaryen, who is Daemon’s younger child and Laena Velaryon’s daughter. Throughout the series, Rhaena has yearned for a dragon, but unfortunately, the egg given to her never hatched. However, by the end of Season 2, there are hints that she might fly with her Targaryen family in Season 3, as she encounters a wild dragon.

Aegon Targaryen

After King Viserys seemed to suggest that his eldest son, Aegon II (played by Tom Glynn-Carney), should rule instead of his sister Rhaenyra, due to a misunderstanding by Alicent Hightower, Aegon, who didn’t want to be king, found himself on the throne. However, he has since led the Greens in conflict against Rhaenyra’s Blacks. Unfortunately, Aegon sustained severe injuries during the battle at Rook’s Rest.

Since the King has been mostly recuperating, his family members have taken over during Season 2. As Season 2 neared its end, there were whispers that Aegon might be secretly sent to Braavos for safekeeping until the war concludes, potentially foreshadowing his storyline in House of the Dragon Season 3.

Helaena Targaryen

In simple terms, throughout her life, Princess Helaena (also known as Phia Saban), Aegon II’s sister, wife, and daughter of Alicent, has had prophetic visions. Following the heart-wrenching loss of her child during Season 2, Helaena was deeply affected by grief for most of the season. Unlike joining the war on her dragon, Dreamfyre, she chose not to participate. However, she delivered a chilling prediction to Aemond in Season 2 that he would meet his end in the war.

Currently, Helaena finds herself in a state of sadness, yet she stays in King’s Landing alongside her mother and their surviving child, Jaehaera. The looming question hanging over Helaena as we move into Season 3 is whether they will make it through the war that threatens the Red Keep.

Aemond Targaryan

Aemond Targaryen (played by Ewan Mitchell), King Aegon II’s brother, bears a strong resemblance to their uncle Daemon. Like his sibling, he covets what he doesn’t have and has used that longing as fuel for war. In Season 2, Aemond seized power when he was named Prince Regent due to Aegon’s injuries. However, a startling truth was unveiled about him in the finale, as his sister Helaena revealed a vision of his impending demise.

Mitchell told Polgyon that he thinks the latest intel from Helaena will cause Aemond to “undergo further development,” yet he is aware that the prince “doesn’t stay idle for long,” and will soon return to combat.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel that Aemond will struggle to digest the information and the revelation he has just experienced. Yet, as we all know, sitting still is not in Aemond’s nature. He’ll be back on his dragon, and who knows what mischief lies ahead.

I sense that this new realization at the end of season 2 will force him to change once more – much like when he lost his eye as a child, an event that drove him to transform into something entirely different. If he doesn’t adapt now, there’s a risk he could break again.

Baela Targaryen

Bethany Antonia, known as Baela Targaryen, is the eldest child born to Daemon and his sister Rhaena. She holds the position of older sister to Rhaenyra. In a significant alliance, she is betrothed to Jacaerys, Rhaenyra’s son. Baela is one of the principal dragon riders supporting the Black faction, with her dragon named Moondancer.

In Season 2, Baela mourned the death of her grandmother, Rhaenys, and her thirst for retribution is undoubtedly going to drive her as we head into the conflict of Season 3.

Bonus: Hugh Hammer

In the realm of Game of Thrones, I, Hugh Hammer, made my entrance in King’s Landing during Season 2, blending in with the common folk. However, it was only later that I unveiled a shocking truth – I was a Targaryen bastard! The twist unfolded on Dragonstone, where I responded to Rhaenyra’s plea for dragonriders. In an incredible turn of events, I succeeded in taming the fearsome Vermithor and claimed my birthright as a Targaryen and one of the Blacks’ dragonseed.

Hugh Hammer plays a crucial part as a dragon-rider during the struggle for King’s Landing, yet his position among the Targaryens once the war concludes remains uncertain.

Bonus: Ulf the White

Tom Bennett made his appearance in Season 2 of House of the Dragon as Ulf, one of the dragonseed. He presents himself as Daemon and Viserys’ illegitimate brother, though this has yet to be confirmed. However, he did manage to secure Silverwing as his dragon. During his brief stint with the Blacks, Ulf managed to irritate them with his lack of knowledge, but his insensitivity went unpunished due to their urgent need for dragonriders in the ongoing war.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate George R.R. Martin’s novel where my character, Ulf, takes up the noble role of a dragonrider for the Black family. However, the aftermath of the war leaves me grappling with my position, a complex situation that may unfold as we delve deeper into the events portrayed in Season 3 of House of the Dragon’s Fire & Blood.

Bonus: Daeron Targaryen

In the series “House of the Dragon,” so far only Daeron Targaryen has been mentioned. He is the fourth child born to Alicent and King Viserys, currently residing as a ward with his great-uncle in Oldtown. It appears that viewers will get to know young Daeron Targaryen in Season 3 of “House of the Dragon.

As a devoted follower in the pages of “Fire & Blood,” I am privileged to ride the magnificent dragon, Tessarion. In the heart of the conflict known as The Dance of Dragons, I stand among the Greens, participating in crucial battles as a dragonrider. The Greens and Blacks amass their dragonriders, and my role is indispensable for Aegon’s cause to have a fighting chance.
