House of the Dragon star calls out women being labelled “difficult” or “a b***h” for speaking out about issues with sex scenes

Actress Olivia Cooke, renowned for her roles in House of the Dragon and the latest Amazon Prime Video series The Girlfriend, recently discussed the role of intimacy coordinators in entertainment production and the ongoing issue of female performers being labeled “difficult” for expressing concerns.

When talking to The i Paper, Cooke praised the intimacy coordinators on The Girlfriend, expressing his surprise that such scenes were previously handled improperly, as there were no such professionals around back then. In simpler terms, he acknowledged the importance of intimacy coordinators and couldn’t believe that they had to improvise such sensitive scenes in the past.

Cooke pointed out that filming sex scenes can place actors in risky and exposed positions, and it’s particularly awkward for those newcomers who may lack the words to express their discomfort when things are suggested.

“And for women, who’ll often get labelled ‘difficult’ or ‘a b***h’ for speaking up,” she continued.

Cooke stated that excellent intimacy coordinators serve as a sensitive guide, articulating unspoken concerns, and they ensure that while portraying intimate scenes accurately reflects human experiences, actors don’t feel violated or stripped of their personal integrity.

In The Girlfriend, Cooke portrays Cherry, who is Daniel (played by Laurie Davidson)’s girlfriend in the story. When Daniel’s mother, played by Robin Wright, grows wary of Cherry, a tense power dynamics unfolds between them as both women vie for control over Daniel’s life.
