House Targaryen Family Tree in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms & Who the King Is

The new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, returns to the world of Westeros, though it focuses on fewer of the major families from Game of Thrones. House Targaryen is the most prominent among them, which makes sense since they still rule from the Iron Throne during this period. While the dragons are no longer around after the Targaryen conflict shown in House of the Dragon, the family remains in power until the uprising led by Robert’s Rebellion.

Although A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shifts the focus away from the richest and most powerful families compared to Game of Thrones, the Targaryens still play a significant role in the story of Ser Duncan the Tall. Several Targaryens appear in George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight novella, and they’re expected to be featured in the upcoming TV series as well. To help viewers keep track of the characters, a Targaryen family tree focusing on those in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be useful. Please be aware that the following information contains minor spoilers from The Hedge Knight novella, and therefore, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

11) King Daeron II Targaryen

Father of Baelor, Aerys I, Rhaegel, and Maekar I

Before we explore the Targaryens featured in the story of Dunk and Egg, it’s helpful to know who the king is at that time—even though he doesn’t appear in person. Daeron II Targaryen is on the Iron Throne during the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which happens near the end of his rule.

As a huge fan of the Seven Kingdoms, I’ve always been fascinated by King Daeron II. He’s the one who finally brought Dorne into the fold, which was a massive achievement. He also had to deal with a really messy civil war – the first Blackfyre Rebellion. Now, he doesn’t actually appear in the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms story, but it’s cool to know that several of his sons and grandkids will end up interacting with Dunk and Egg. It adds a lot of depth to the world, knowing these family connections are there.

10) Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen

First Son of King Daeron II

Baelor “Breakspear” is the oldest son of King Daeron II and a prominent character in the stories of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In The Hedge Knight, he surprisingly becomes a friend to Dunk, remembering Ser Arlan Pennytree and standing up for him when others won’t.

Dunk is allowed to compete in the Ashford Meadow tournament because of Baelor. Later, Baelor’s admiration for Dunk proves valuable when things don’t go as planned. Bertie Carvel plays Baelor in the HBO series, and he’s sure to quickly become a fan favorite.

9) Aerys I Targaryen

Second Son of King Daeron II

Aerys I Targaryen, the second son of King Daeron II, isn’t featured in The Hedge Knight. Because of this, he probably won’t appear in the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, since he later becomes king, there’s a chance he could appear in future seasons of the Game of Thrones spin-off.

Aerys I was a scholarly king who enjoyed reading and collecting books, but he and his wife, Lady Aelinor Penrose, never had any children. His time as ruler was marked by the devastating Great Spring Sickness, and he faced two major uprisings known as the second and third Blackfyre Rebellions.

8) Rhaegel Targaryen

Third Son of King Daeron II

Rhaegel Targaryen, the third son of Daeron II, doesn’t appear in The Hedge Knight, and it’s probably safe to assume he won’t be in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms either. He wasn’t a significant figure in the history of the Seven Kingdoms. Records describe Rhaegel as mentally unstable and not very bright, and because of this, he was generally passed over when considering who should inherit the Iron Throne.

7) Maekar I Targaryen

Fourth Son of King Daeron II

Maekar I Targaryen, the youngest son of Daeron II, is another member of that generation’s Targaryen family who appears in The Hedge Knight. He attends the tournament at Ashford Meadow with several of his sons. Though his son Baelor befriends Dunk, Maekar I views the hedge knight with suspicion.

Sam Spruell will be playing Maekar I in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and he’ll share some scenes with the main character, Dunk. While not a major role, Maekar’s appearances will significantly impact Dunk’s journey and drive the story forward.

6) Valarr Targaryen

First Son of Baelor

As a huge fan of the Dunk & Egg stories, I’m really excited about the upcoming HBO show! While Valarr Targaryen, the eldest son of Baelor, isn’t a major character, he does appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms through the tourney at Ashford Meadow. And it’s great to hear Oscar Morgan has been cast to play him – I think he’ll be perfect!

As the oldest son of the future king, Valarr won’t be participating in risky tournaments—he’ll stick to safer displays of skill. He’s also unlikely to have much, if any, interaction with Dunk, unlike his father.

5) Matarys Targaryen

Second Son of Baelor

Matarys Targaryen is the younger son of Baelor Targaryen, nicknamed ‘Breakspear.’ He probably won’t appear in the story A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While Baelor talks about his children, there’s no suggestion that Matarys was even at the Ashford tourney, let alone competed in it. George R.R. Martin hasn’t written much about him, but we do know he died during the Great Spring Sickness.

4) Daeron Targaryen

First Son of Maekar I

Viewers were introduced to Daeron Targaryen, the oldest son of Maekar I, in the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Though many may not realize it, he’s the character who awkwardly approaches the main character in a tavern, saying he had a dream about him. Considering the Targaryen family’s history with prophetic dreams, this moment will likely be important later on.

Henry Ashton plays Daeron in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and he’ll appear with Dunk again before the first season ends. As the story unfolds, viewers will discover that Daeron doesn’t live up to his father’s expectations. He’s often known for drinking too much—earning him the nickname Daeron the Drunken—and he tends to be a bit of a coward.

3) Aerion Targaryen

Second Son of Maekar I

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Aerion Targaryen is a key character to watch, as he becomes an enemy to Ser Duncan the Tall. As the second son of Maekar I, he’s known for being boastful and cruel, and the story will likely show more of these traits as it progresses.

Dunk gets into trouble with Prince Aerion, putting his life in danger. Finn Bennett plays Aerion in the series, and the trailers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms suggest he’s perfectly portraying the character’s unpleasant personality.

2) Aemon Targaryen

Third Son of Maekar I

Aemon Targaryen, the third son of Maekar I, is a familiar character, though not through the story A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While he won’t be featured in that spinoff, he’s the same Aemon who served as the maester at Castle Black in Game of Thrones. He lived a remarkably long life, and as fans know, he wasn’t interested in seeking power or fighting.

During the events of The Hedge Knight, Aemon is still a young boy and doesn’t participate in the tournament. He’s busy with his lessons, so he isn’t at Ashford Meadow.

1) Aegon V Targaryen

Fourth & Youngest Son of Maekar I

I’m really excited about seeing Aegon V Targaryen come to life in the show! He’s Maekar I’s youngest son, and I’ve heard he’s quite important to Dunk’s story – though I think it’ll be more fun to let viewers discover how that unfolds. It sounds like we’ll be seeing him become a familiar face in the world of Westeros, just like his brothers, before the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is over.

Other Notable Targaryens From This Time Period

Besides the main characters, there are other Targaryens who existed during the time of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but they won’t play significant roles in the story we’ll see.

Besides the four sons seen in the Game of Thrones series, Maekar I also had two daughters, with Daella Targaryen being the oldest.

Rhae Targaryen: Rhae Targaryen is Maekar I’s youngest daughter.

Aelor & Aelora Targaryen: Aelor and Aelora are the twins of Rhaegel and his wife, Alys Arryn.

Daenora Targaryen: Daenora Targaryen is the youngest child of Rhaegel and Alys.

As a huge fan, I’m really intrigued by the potential appearance of Brynden Rivers, also known as Bloodraven, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Even though he doesn’t show up in The Hedge Knight itself, we all know him as the Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones. It’ll be fascinating to see if the future books in this series connect the dots and bring him into the story, especially knowing his eventual role!
