Jar Jar Binks, once widely disliked, has recently become a fan favorite, and now he’s getting a new comic book from Marvel. Written with contributions from Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar, and Marc Guggenheim, and featuring artwork by Kieran McKeown and Laura Braga, this special issue explores a previously untold story from Jar Jar’s past.
We never really delved into what happened between Episodes II and III, that period where Jar Jar Binks sort of disappeared into the background. I filmed a scene for Revenge of the Sith with Jar Jar and Palpatine – a good conversation as they walked away from a ship at the spaceport – but it ended up being cut. I always thought there was more to Jar Jar’s potential as a politician than the films showed, and I hoped to explore that time gap. My goal was to get that cut scene included in the final film.
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 Adds New Depth to Jar Jar’s Story
The scene Best discusses is part of a bigger story that reveals Jar Jar Binks is a much more complex character than previously shown in the films or the Clone Wars series. Best and Guggenheim developed a new backstory for Jar Jar, portraying him as capable and interesting – a departure from how fans typically see him. This special issue gives Jar Jar the opportunity to make amends for his past actions and take responsibility for his part in Palpatine’s ascent to power, ultimately allowing him to move forward.
The new comic, Star Wars: Jar Jar #1, kicks off a fresh adventure for both Kelleran Beq and Jar Jar, expanding on the backstory of a beloved Star Wars character. The story could have a significant impact on the wider Star Wars universe, and it’s clear that the creators, led by Best, approached Jar Jar’s character with genuine care and attention to detail, which is a welcome change.
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 is on sale now.
