Owen Cooper is celebrating a historic win at the 2025 Emmys.
At just 15 years old, he made history by becoming the youngest person to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. His powerful performance in the Netflix crime drama *Adolescence* earned him this recognition, also making him the youngest male Emmy winner ever. (You can see photos of all the stars who attended the ceremony here.)
Although the award is a significant achievement, Owen isn’t the youngest person ever to receive recognition from the Television Academy. That honor goes to Roxana Zal, who was just 14 years old when she won an Emmy in 1984 for her role in *Something About Amelia*.
Even though he’s young, Owen gave a truly impactful speech when accepting the award, and it’s a message that will connect with everyone who hears it.
The British actor shared onstage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14th that when he began taking drama classes a few years ago, he never imagined he’d be in the United States, let alone performing here. He said the evening was proof that anything is possible if you pay attention, stay focused, and challenge yourself. He encouraged the audience not to worry about embarrassment, because anything can be achieved with effort.
Owen received praise for his role as a teenager accused of murder. Stephen Graham, who co-created and wrote the four-part series, also earned acclaim for his performance as the boy’s father. Graham, age 52, has said the story was inspired by real-life crimes in his area and his interest in the difficulties of parenting in the age of social media.
I’ve been following this show closely, and the creators made a really interesting choice. They could have gone down the typical route with stories about gangs or difficult home lives like abuse or alcoholism, but they deliberately didn’t. They wanted us, the audience, to see this family and genuinely think, ‘Wow, this could happen to anyone – even us!’ And that’s what’s so terrifying and compelling – it’s an everyday family facing their absolute worst nightmare.
