The Force is strong in Ali Hazelwood‘s art.
Originating from a distant corner of the universe, I found inspiration for my smash-hit romance novel, “The Love Hypothesis.” Now, this heartwarming tale is set to unfold on the big screen with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman bringing it to life.
Indeed, it was Hazelwood, a devoted lover of “Star Wars,” who initially published the fanfiction that later gained immense popularity on TikTok back in 2018. This story, titled “Head Over Feet,” was sparked by the 2015 film “The Force Awakens.” In this version, Kylo Ren (portrayed by Adam Driver) and Jedi Rey (Daisy Ridley) were creatively reimagined in an academic environment.
In an interview with Collider back in 2021, Hazelwood shared that he was deeply engrossed in writing fanfiction. Over time, he found himself contemplating the idea of creating something original, aiming to push his limits and explore new possibilities.
It’s interesting to note that Thao Le, who is now her agent, had previously encountered some of her works on the fanfiction site Archive of Our Own (AO3). Impressed by their potential, she contacted her, expressing her belief that these stories could become very popular.
In their initial chat, Hazelwood reminisced about sending the fanfiction they believed needed the most refining – the one they had – to her. Following that, they signed up with her.
Following around 70 billion further edits, her fanfiction morphed into “The Love Hypothesis,” where Kylo was reimagined as Professor Adam Carlsen, and Rey took on the character of PhD candidate Olive Smith.
In order to make her story legitimate, just like other fanfiction authors who transitioned into mainstream publishing, Hazelwood needed to eliminate any elements linking it to the original copyrighted material.
It’s not surprising that Hazelwood is not the first author to gain popularity from fanfiction, as E.L. James’ blockbuster “Fifty Shades of Grey” series originated from a reinterpretation of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga.
In 2012, James shared with the Chicago Tribune that following Christmas, he immersed himself in reading some books for about five days straight. He found these stories incredibly captivating and heartwarming. In fact, he couldn’t get enough of them and ended up re-reading them multiple times.
Two weeks following her immersion in the series and 2008 movie, James penned “Master of the Universe,” where Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s narrative was reimagined within a large corporate context. Notably, just as the story on which it was based – originally inspired by the “Fifty Shades” trilogy – was transformed into its own thriving film series featuring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in lead roles.
Instead of finding inspiration in fiction or onstage, Anna Todd‘s muse was the British boy band One Direction. This group significantly altered the course of her life. Being a devoted fan, she invested a considerable amount of time reading fan-written narratives about the members: Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson on the internet.
In 2014, she shared with TopMob News that she had grown impatient waiting for Wattpad fan fiction updates, so she began crafting her own stories as a pastime. She admitted that she hadn’t anticipated anyone would actually read them.
In the subsequent years, that particular tale gained immense popularity, eventually expanding into a five-part movie series with Hero Fiennes-Tiffin portraying a character reminiscent of the “Watermelon Sugar” artist. The narrative delves into the intricate romance between Hardin, the rogue, and Tessa.
Regardless of any negative connotations associated with fanfiction, particularly when it gets published, Todd recognizes the worth that it adds to creative expression.
She shared with Swooon in October 2024, “The unique charm lies in the palpable enthusiasm found when reading fanfiction, as it’s not written under a contract. Instead, it’s an expression of pure love. Some of the most remarkable pieces I’ve encountered were born from fanfiction.
Now, for more books that are turning into movies and TV shows, keep reading.

We’re Thrilled for Several Reasons: Initially, let’s focus on Anne, Dakota, and Josh. The story revolves around a struggling writer tasked with finishing a popular series following an enigmatic author’s accident, promising a thrilling, intricate journey from the outset. However, having these three talented actors at the heart of the production makes watching this tale unfold even more captivating.

Based on: Rufi Thorpe’s 2024 novel
Starring: Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer and Nicole Kidman
Premieres: TBD in 2026 on Apple TV+
Why we’re Excited: What’s a limited series without the appearance of Nicole Kidman? Thorpe’s book, about the daughter of a former Hooters waitress and a one-time pro-wrestler who resorts to OnlyFans after becoming a single mom at 20, is already captivating. But with Kidman on board for this eight-episode series, it has definitely moved to the top of our must-watch list.

This upcoming series, titled similarly to Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling book collection with a total of 26 books, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video, featuring an all-star cast including Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Jake Cannavale. The excitement for this production stems from its origins in a popular book series, coupled with Kidman’s involvement (as demonstrated by her roles in Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, and The Undoing). To top it off, the talented ensemble will portray crime-fighting sisters, making it our most anticipated show of the year.
According To: Elin Hilderbrand’s 2023 novel
