How Billie Lourd Explained Mom Carrie Fisher’s Death to 5-Year-Old Son

Carrie Fisher’s love is still strong with her loved ones.

Nine years after Carrie Fisher’s death, her daughter, Billie Lourd, shared how she explained the loss to her five-year-old son, Kingston, and her husband, Austen Rydell, on what would have been Carrie’s 69th birthday.

Billie recently shared that her son asked about the death of someone they knew. In an Instagram post from October 21st, she explained that she told her son the person hadn’t taken care of their health, feeling it was a truthful but incomplete answer. Her son immediately pointed out that she, his father, and he do take care of themselves, which she affirmed. Billie then reflected that, unlike the situation with the person who died, they aren’t currently facing the same immediate threat of death, and that a more detailed explanation could wait until her son is older.

Billie explained that he didn’t press her for details, so they just dropped the conversation. However, it really hurt her feelings and made her angry with the other person involved.

Carrie Fisher passed away in December 2016 at age 60. While her death was officially attributed to a heart attack, sleep apnea also played a role. Throughout her life, the actress openly discussed her battles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Billie, who shares a two-year-old daughter named Jackson with Austen, is experiencing even deeper grief because of her mother’s past health struggles.

It feels strange to be angry with someone who’s passed away, because there’s no way to resolve those feelings. I’ve realized I need to let myself feel everything – anger at her for struggling with sobriety, sadness that she couldn’t overcome it, and also gratitude that she was in my life.

Billie also shared that her grandmother never had the chance to meet her grandchildren and watch them become the wonderful people they are now.

Even though Billie has mixed emotions, she also wants her kids to remember the good things about their grandmother.

The Scream Queens actress shared that she wants people to remember her as a truly gifted and magical person. She explained that on days when she’s remembering her, she focuses on the positive aspects, telling her children amusing stories, watching a film of hers, and enjoying one of her favorite treats – like a Coke with lots of ice.

Billie described her grief as a confusing mix of emotions – a difficult and overwhelming experience – but through it all, she also feels thankful.

She wrote that the soup had ultimately made her feel healthier, helping her realize how precious life is and appreciate the good things she has.

She concluded, “Happy birthday momby. I miss you and love you more than you could ever know.”
