The movie, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, builds the foundation for Season 2 by hinting at Makima’s dangerous and manipulative side, and the danger she represents to Denji. While Makima remained mysterious throughout the first season, this movie provides some insight into what drives her and how she thinks.
As a huge fan of Chainsaw Man, I’m really excited about the Reze Arc! It picks up right after the first season, and it introduces this fascinating new character, Reze. At first, Denji thinks she might actually like him, which is a nice change of pace! But it quickly becomes clear that there’s a lot more going on with Reze, and her interest in him isn’t exactly what it seems. There are definitely some dark secrets at play.
Here’s how Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc teases Season 2
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc introduces elements that will be important in Season 2, hinting at Makima’s future as the primary villain.
The movie hints at Makima’s true, evil intentions through the actions of Reze, the primary antagonist. Reze first appears to fall in love with Denji, but then attempts to kill him, exposing her real goal: to obtain Pochita, the powerful Chainsaw Devil who is now part of Denji.
Makima wants to control Pochita, and like others, she has a hidden agenda. She tries to win Denji’s trust with kindness, planning to take complete control of him later. Her strategy revolves around manipulating him into willingly submitting to her power.
The movie hints at Makima’s intentions early on, during a film marathon with Denji. When she cries during a movie, Denji questions if he even has a heart. Makima responds by resting her head on his chest and confirming that he does, a gesture that subtly foreshadows her desire to take control of Pochita.
Denji often thinks of Reze as being similar to Makima, and this shows just how manipulative Makima really is. Reze even attempts to help Denji break free from Makima’s control by pointing out that Makima only gives him what she needs to keep him under her power.
The movie hints at Makima’s cruel nature when she finds and kills Reze, who had started to fall in love with Denji and was trying to escape with him. Before killing Reze, Makima lets her know she’s particularly interested in Denji.
Denji expects to see Reze at the cafe where they first met, but she doesn’t arrive. He believes she wasn’t honest about her feelings, and Makima, who has been manipulating him since the first season, is able to continue her control over him in the new season.
