Since the latest season of Stranger Things came out, fans have been eagerly searching for information and discussing what happens next. A big question on everyone’s mind is what becomes of the character Eddie Munson.
Eddie Munson, the instantly popular leader of the Hellfire Club, quickly won over viewers, even though he was a new character. Knowing how the show Stranger Things often handles new faces, fans immediately feared he wouldn’t survive the dangers of the Upside Down.
The finale of season 4 confirmed what we suspected: Eddie bravely sacrificed himself to save others from a swarm of Demobats. His guitar solo during that moment was one of the most memorable scenes of the season, and the season was full of them.
Even though fans saw Eddie die in Dustin’s arms, many still hope he’ll come back. Despite the Duffer Brothers telling Empire he is definitely dead, people haven’t given up on the idea that he could be resurrected, much like the biblical figure Lazarus.
Okay, so the big question is how could Eddie possibly return? Let’s explore all the different ways the filmmakers could pull off a surprise comeback for this character. I’m going to break down the possibilities and see what feels most likely – and what would be truly shocking!
Could Eddie Munson return in Stranger Things season 5? Every possibility broken down
The Kas Theory

A widely discussed fan theory suggests Eddie Munson could become Kas the Betrayer. Kas was originally a knight who became a vampire, serving Vecna before eventually turning against him. This is considered a strong possibility if Eddie were to survive.
It’s unsettling to think about, but the kind Eddie we knew could end up working for Vecna.
This would be incredibly upsetting for his longtime friends, especially Dustin, and it would also fit with how Stranger Things incorporates elements from the Dungeons & Dragons game.
Also, if Eddie turned into a vampire – which could be linked to the Demobats – he wouldn’t actually be living anymore.
Trapped in Vecna’s Mindscape

Vecna typically leaves his victims mentally broken and decaying within his own mind, as we saw when Max narrowly escaped in episode 5. Because Max did manage to escape, it’s possible Eddie is currently trapped in the same mental realm.
Vecna’s mental world is built on manipulating thoughts and suggestions. While Vecna is incredibly powerful within it, the fact that Max and Eleven were both able to resist him suggests that Eddie might also have a chance to fight back.
Throughout the fourth season, Eddie repeatedly showed incredible inner strength, much like Max and Eleven.
If Eddie lived through his attack, his mind might be stuck in a mental space, trying to find a way back to his body in the Upside Down. Maybe if Eleven manages to beat Vecna, both Max and Eddie could be brought back to life?
Flashbacks and Memories

While viewers are hoping for new scenes with Eddie, the show could easily bring him back in season 5 through flashbacks from previous episodes.
Eddie’s death has really affected Dustin, especially because so many people in Hawkins now wrongly blame him. It’s natural that Dustin would think about Eddie as he tries to cope with his sadness.
Bringing Eddie back in this way confirms the Duffer brothers’ promise that he’s truly gone, but still lets fans see more of the character.
In hiding

Similar to the flashback idea, this doesn’t require filming new scenes with Quinn. Rather than showing Eddie alive and healthy, the story could hint that he somehow survived and is now hiding in the Upside Down.
Given that Will survived his time in the Upside Down in season one, it’s possible Eddie could have survived too. This idea suggests Eddie’s death in season four wasn’t real – he likely just seemed to die and then hid. The fact that we don’t see his body after the incident, and that Dustin doesn’t check for a pulse, supports this possibility.
It’s easy to get caught up in overthinking things, but the show’s creators actually provided the answer quite directly. However, just like the mysterious Upside Down, the meaning of words can be flexible and open to interpretation, making it difficult to pin down a single, definitive explanation.
Stranger Things 5 part 1 premieres on Netflix on Wednesday 26th November 2025.
