When Dale Earnhardt Jr. first met Amy Reimann, things didn’t immediately click for the NASCAR driver – and it wasn’t because he was distracted by rumors that Jessica Simpson was interested in him.
After proposing to his girlfriend of six years, the athlete explained to TopMob News in 2015 that he’d been waiting for the perfect moment. He described how he’d spent a lot of time thinking about relationship milestones, wondering when he’d know it was right. He admitted to a lot of internal debate before finally deciding to propose.
While Dale Earnhardt was in Germany researching his family history that June, he surprised everyone by proposing marriage. He didn’t just wait around – he got down on one knee and asked the question.
He later told TopMob he wondered why he’d waited so long, saying, “I kept thinking, why did I put this off? It feels so good!”
He later admitted that he needed to get himself sorted out before he felt ready to propose.
Dale recalled that when he and his future wife first started dating, he’d much rather spend a week with his friends than have one-on-one time with her. He told USA Today in 2019 that she would ask about going somewhere together, and he’d respond by saying he didn’t think spending a week alone with just the two of them would be very enjoyable.

Amy, originally from Texas, earned a degree in interior design from the University of Kentucky in 2005. While working as a designer in Florida, and having previously been a cheerleader for the University of Kentucky, she met Dale in 2009. Dale explained that he was accustomed to having things done his way and receiving a lot of help, but Amy challenged his lifestyle. He said she was patient, but often frustrated with how he lived, and pointed out how unsustainable it was. It caused a lot of friction between them.
He credited a “badass” therapist named Jane for no less than saving their relationship.
He shared that he’s gone to therapy on and off throughout his life and believes it’s beneficial for everyone. He encourages people to try it, saying we all have things we could use help with.
Dale and Amy were thrilled to have their therapist present when they exchanged vows on December 31, 2016, at Childress Vineyards in Lexington, North Carolina.
Dale explained that they still visit Jane about every six months, whether they feel it’s necessary or not. He said she always asks why they’re there, and they simply tell her they wanted to talk, which usually goes well.

In fact, his only regret was not racing to the altar.
He admitted he used to be very self-centered, always focused on his own desires and happiness. He now realizes that true happiness comes from sharing life with someone and raising a family.
Ten months after their wedding, Dale and Amy announced they were expecting a baby. Their daughter, Isla Rose Earnhardt, was born on April 30, 2018.
Dale, who stopped racing full-time in 2017, recently told USA Today that he’s fully embracing fatherhood – from changing diapers to giving baths. He explained that he wants his daughter, Isla, to have a strong and dependable relationship with him.
This was especially true considering his relationship with his father, the late NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt, who tragically died in a crash at the 2001 Daytona 500.
Dale admitted he underestimated how much he’d want to be involved as a parent. He explained that before experiencing the love for a child, things like changing diapers seemed daunting. He initially thought he’d have to force himself to do those tasks, but he knew he needed to try.
He truly enjoyed being a devoted and involved father. On October 12, 2020, he and Amy welcomed their second daughter, Nicole Loraine Earnhardt, named after Dale’s mother, Brenda Loraine Jackson, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2019.

Amy was really enjoying motherhood, telling WCNC in Charlotte, North Carolina, in September 2021, that she couldn’t remember what she did with her time before having kids. She said her children were wonderful, funny, and brought so much joy to her life, making her feel completely content and happy.
Meanwhile, it turned out Isla was an inherent gearhead.
Amy explained that her daughter has never been to a racetrack and doesn’t know her father used to be a race car driver. Amy believes her daughter has a natural talent for racing, likely inherited from her father, and she’s accepting of that.
However, everyone had planned to be in Richmond, North Carolina, to see Dale compete in the Go Bowling 250 Xfinity race, which was being held to remember the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Amy said she’d be in trouble with Dale if she didn’t bring the girls to watch him race his car.
All part of a day in the life for this proud girl dad.
He shared with the New York Times in June that he had always pictured having a son, but now accepts that won’t happen. He says he’s come to terms with it and is perfectly content with how things are.

And he knows that the wheels would’ve come off long ago if not for his wife.
Honestly, committing to Amy and really focusing on becoming the husband she deserved was the best thing I ever did. I was on Kyle Petty’s show back in 2021, and I told him it just made everything better – I truly became a happier person because of it.
