How Daniel Day-Lewis’ Son Ronan Day-Lewis Made Him Return to Hollywood

Daniel Day-Lewis’ onscreen comeback wasn’t an overnight decision.

Rather than staying retired-he’d initially announced he was leaving acting in 2017-the three-time Oscar winner slowly returned to filmmaking while co-writing his new psychological drama, Anemone, with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.

“It all started with a simple idea – to collaborate on a project,” explained Daniel, 68, in an exclusive interview with TopMob News at the film’s premiere at the New York Film Festival in New York City on Sept. 28. “We quickly realized we both wanted to examine the concept of brotherhood, so we created a story about two brothers working in a shed. That was the very beginning – all we had at that point.”

As Ronan, who is making his directorial debut with this project, explains, imagining his father in the main role wasn’t just useful while writing the script-it also convinced the Lincoln star to act again.

The 27-year-old explained that the story really came alive when the characters began to develop independently and in relation to each other, highlighting their differences. “Seeing Ray become more interesting to [him] happened around that time,” she said. “It was incredible to witness the character’s evolution alongside him, both as an actor and a co-writer. It was a truly unique experience.”

A process that proved to be rewarding for both father and son.

“We both desperately wanted the chance to collaborate on a project,” Ronan explained, “and when we finally landed on an idea we were both passionate about, we immediately started working on it.”

Earlier this month, Daniel-who last acted in the 2017 historical drama Phantom Thread-explained that the possibility of collaborating with his son prompted him to think about returning to acting after being away for almost ten years.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Sept. 10, Daniel explained that he knew Ronan would pursue filmmaking, and he was choosing a different path. He said, “I wondered if we could collaborate on a project and find a way to keep it simple, avoiding the usual complexities of a large-scale production.”

Daniel appeared very happy with his choice, sharing with the magazine, “It was, from start to finish, simply a wonderful experience being with him.”
