How Emma Stone Tricked Everyone Into Believing She Wasn’t Bald In Bugonia

Emma Stone, a hugely famous actress, is accustomed to public attention. That’s why she takes steps to avoid having major changes to her appearance revealed before everyone else sees them. This was especially true for her recent film, Bugonia, a mind-bending and critically acclaimed movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. In fact, her look in the film extended beyond the screen, as she had recently shaved her head for the role.

After filming Bugonia, Stone decided to keep her shaved head a secret from the public for as long as possible. She told People magazine that because no photos were taken on set, she thought, “Why not keep this up for a little bit?” and prolong the surprise.

She described how working with Yorgos Lanthimos on their previous film, Poor Things, influenced her decision to avoid revealing her appearance before the trailer came out, explaining that…

One of the best parts about ‘Poor Things’ was keeping Bella’s appearance, especially her long black hair, a secret. The trailer reveal was really impactful because no one had seen it before, and it was great to finally show it off.

Bella’s appearance was already unique, especially for fans of her work in Superbad, but her shaved head in Bugonia is even more striking. The director actually filmed the head-shaving process, which caused Emma Stone to become very anxious.

To cover up her hair, she wore beanies for three months, which wasn’t always comfortable, especially at first. She didn’t love the way it felt initially, but eventually got used to it and became comfortable with her noticeably lighter hair.

Beanies weren’t her only strategy for avoiding unwanted attention on her hair. She explained to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show – though she hilariously forgot the show had been canceled – that she once tried wearing a wig to an event, but it didn’t go well. In her own words:

I only wore that wig one time – for the movie premiere. It was a good quality wig, but I kept drawing attention to it all night. I’m not very good at being discreet, and I just kept asking everyone if they could tell it wasn’t my real hair. Everyone probably figured it out because I kept touching it and pointing it out!

Here’s a helpful hint: if you’re trying to keep your wig a secret, avoid mentioning the word “wig” at all, even when talking about something completely unrelated. For example, don’t say you’re “wigging out” or talk about a wig while trying to hide that you’re wearing one!

Featuring fantastic acting from Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, Bugonia is a compelling watch, and it’s about much more than just seeing a different look for Emma Stone. The film tells a darkly twisting story of how far some conspiracy theorists will go, and it opens in theaters this Friday, October 31st.
