The new series, much like the book it’s based on, tells the story of Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall) and Sam Florek (Matt Cornett), childhood sweethearts who reconnect as adults at a funeral. A controversial plot point involves a one-night stand between 17-year-old Percy and Sam’s brother, Charlie Florek (Michael Bradway), after Percy and Sam break up.
The way this dramatic reveal happens isn’t exactly the same in both versions of the story. In the book, Charlie confesses to his brother shortly after the affair. However, the show depicts them agreeing to keep it hidden, with the truth finally surfacing eleven years later when Percy understands she must tell Sam if they hope to build a future together.
The timing of Sam discovering the truth was particularly dramatic. He had just confessed his love for Percy after ten years, following his breakup with his girlfriend, Taylor. This revelation led to a heated confrontation, and the show’s use of flashbacks and time jumps amplified the emotional impact.
Cornett discussed how the show cleverly draws connections between Sam and Percy at different stages of their lives, highlighting mirrored yet contrasting experiences. In an interview with TopMob News, he explained that the filmmakers effectively used parallel storytelling and editing to show both characters facing similar challenges, but from very different perspectives and having opposing dialogues.
He explained that one of the things he loves most is seeing how people, even as they grow older, still remain fundamentally the same at heart.
As you might expect, filming the big reveal—on a rock overlooking the lake they both loved—was a little nerve-wracking and stressful for Soverall, as he confessed.
She described the experience as “two days filled with tears and heartfelt apologies.” It was emotionally draining for both of them, but she found the process surprisingly therapeutic and enjoyable each time.
And beyond the trust they had with the people behind the scenes, they had each other.
Cornett really praised Sadie’s performance in that scene. Director Jeff W. Byrd encouraged her to fully express Percy’s emotions – to be vulnerable and almost plead – and she delivered a fantastic performance, completely nailing the moment.
I was completely blown away by her performance – it genuinely moved me to tears! I remember watching her, and there was this one moment where she really let loose, and I just couldn’t help it – tears started streaming down my face. It wasn’t just acting; everything she said felt so real, so raw, and so incredibly genuine. It was honestly one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.
Bradway observed that the discovery caused a very strong reaction, with Charlie and Sam immediately getting into a physical fight over it.
He told TopMob that he enjoys keeping the show’s secrets as an actor. It allows him to play with dynamics between characters – figuring out who is in on it and who isn’t. He believes a good twist is always exciting, and this show delivers that really well.
The season concludes with a promising scene: Sam unexpectedly finds Percy at the tavern she now manages. This leaves viewers eager to see what happens with these characters if the show gets renewed for another season.
Cornett expressed hope that the individuals involved will be able to work through their issues, have an open and honest discussion, and rebuild their relationship. She believes they need to re-establish a friendship before considering a romantic future, and she’s optimistic about seeing them start fresh and reconnect.

The show doesn’t follow the book exactly—it changes how and when Sam finds out about Charlie and Percy’s relationship, among other things. In the series Every Summer After, Percy, played by Sadie Soverall, is a 30-year-old living in Toronto. She’s a successful senior editor at an interior design magazine and works with her close friend Chantal, portrayed by Aurora Perrineau.
In chapter three, she explained that her job involved assigning articles and managing photoshoots for the nation’s leading home décor magazine. She enjoyed her work and excelled at it, and at a celebration of the magazine’s 40th anniversary, the editor-in-chief, Brenda, acknowledged her role in successfully transitioning Shelter to a digital platform.
In the show Every Year After, Percy used to be obsessed with horror, but now she works as an obituary writer. It’s not her dream job, but as she puts it, it’s a reliable way to make a living – newspapers still need people to write obituaries.
Through her work in media, Percy meets Chantal, who becomes a close friend. They initially connect only through phone conversations when Percy travels to see her.
She explained that she and Chantal first connected as interns at the city magazine, where Chantal now works as the entertainment editor. They became friends while working together to verify the details in restaurant reviews.
On the show, Chantal is a successful lawyer who’s busy both with her career and planning her wedding, all while traveling with Percy. Spending the week in Barry’s Bay gives viewers a chance to see the complexities of her relationship with her fiancé, Drew, and how she interacts with people from Percy’s history.
The story takes place entirely in Canada, specifically in the province of Ontario. The main character, Percy, is originally from Toronto, which is around 198 miles from Barry’s Bay, and he continues to live there as an adult.
The TV series differs from the book in a few ways. While the best friends are still American and live in Seattle, a plot point arises when Chantal’s passport expires right before her planned return to the U.S. Also, although Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie Florek (Michael Bradway) are Canadian, just like in the book, the show moved the setting from Ontario, Canada, to British Columbia.
This change enhances Seattle’s position as the primary city in the story. As showrunner Amy Harris previously explained to Teen Vogue, once they found the ideal West Coast location, they wanted to be truthful and avoid falsely claiming it was somewhere else, like Ontario.
The challenges of distance also play a role in Sam and Percy’s developing relationship. Once Sam gets her driver’s license, she jokingly asks Percy if she could travel to the lake by herself, to which Percy replies with playful skepticism: “Drive to another country? I doubt it.”
When Charlie Florek (played by Michael Bradway) tells Percy about Sue’s death and her memorial service, Drew encourages her to go spend the week with her closest friend in Barry’s Bay.
This development shifts Chantal, now a successful lawyer, from simply being a close friend of Percy’s over the phone to joining him on a road trip, allowing Barry’s Bay to impact her life as well.
In the TV series, Chantal agrees to accompany her, but in the book, Percy travels to Barry’s Bay alone, without informing her friend, and chooses to drive herself.
In chapter three, she confessed that she almost didn’t tell Chantal her plans. But then she imagined being in a car accident and no one understanding why she was so far from the city. Because of that, she quickly texted Chantal from the rental car lot, adding a few extra ‘I’m totally fine!’ exclamation points before sending it.
Percy and Sam shared their first kiss after a scary movie night. In the summer of 2013, after being frightened by The Blair Witch Project, Percy asked if he could stay over at Sam’s house. While sharing her bed, they admitted their feelings for each other and then kissed.
Although they had a sleepover with a similar setup on the show, their first kiss doesn’t happen until the next episode, during a playfully romantic anatomy lesson the following year.
Percy decided to leave Barry’s Bay sooner than planned after finding out that Sam’s girlfriend, Taylor Curtis, is responsible for handling Sue’s estate and needs to be at the reading of the will. During the meeting, Taylor learns she has inherited The Tavern, a complete surprise to everyone involved.
Charlie is negotiating the sale of his restaurant to Delilah Mason (Abigail Cowen), who used to be close with Percy, and this deal causes friction between the brothers and Percy. In the book, The Tavern is ultimately purchased by a loyal employee, Julien, who gets a special price from Charlie and Sam.
Just as in the book, Delilah first goes to Barry’s Bay with Percy on his annual visit. But the series reveals that Delilah has become a regular in town—and important to the Florek brothers—now that she and her husband, Whit, own a beautiful summer home there.
Both the book and TV series reveal that Sam and Charlie’s father passed away from a heart attack. The show, however, delves deeper into how Sue copes with her loss.
When our dad passed away, Mom really struggled,” Charlie started, recalling when he was fourteen. “It was a tough first year, and you were only eleven, so you probably don’t remember or didn’t realize how much she was hurting. I tried my best to shield you from it.
My mom was really sad for a while. Maybe a therapist would say she was depressed. She sometimes didn’t even get out of her pajamas all day. I remember coming home from school and finding her just sitting at the kitchen table, staring into space. It was frightening as a kid.
That period was a turning point for old man Florek. Charlie explains that he also started helping out with chores, like getting groceries.
He says that as she recovered, things improved for everyone. However, he admits he’s still angry with her for leaving them to cope on their own that year.
Throughout the story, both Percy and Charlie feel deeply guilty about something that happened, causing Percy to permanently leave Barry’s Bay.
After Charlie announced he wouldn’t be spending the summer at Barry’s Bay because he was starting college early, Percy found herself spending a lot of time with him. One vulnerable moment led to them having sex, despite Charlie secretly being attracted to his brother’s girlfriend, Percy.
Okay, so in the latest episode, things get really complicated! Sam decided not to propose to Taylor, and then he went to Percy hoping to explore a relationship. But here’s where it gets messy – Percy, feeling incredibly guilty, confessed to a past mistake. Turns out, she and Charlie were actually intimate about ten years ago, after they’d broken up. It’s a total bombshell that’s definitely going to shake things up for everyone involved!
Hearing the news for the first time, Sam was heartbroken and turned away, even as Percy desperately tried to explain her regret.
Percy kept calling Charlie, and finally texted him to reveal that Charlie’s younger brother had found out about their disastrous plan. Charlie then confronted Sam, but Sam responded by ending their communication, especially given that it was shortly after their mother’s memorial service.
By the time Percy finally tells Sam the truth in the book, he’s had years to process it. This is because Charlie revealed the information to Sam and Sue much earlier, just a few months after it initially occurred.
