How Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho Returns in Dune 3 After Dying in the First Movie

The promotion for Dune: Part Three has begun with a stunning trailer, and viewers are already buzzing with questions. A major point of discussion is the appearance of Jason Momoa, who played Duncan Idaho in the first Dune film (2021). Duncan Idaho was a key figure as the skilled swordmaster of House Atreides and a close friend and mentor to Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).

Warning: This contains spoilers! Duncan died protecting Paul and Lady Jessica on the planet Arrakis from a dangerous attack. So, fans are wondering how he appears in the upcoming Dune: Part Three.

Duncan’s Return Was Always Part of the Story

I’m afraid there’s really only one question I need to ask: have you read the books?

Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, built an incredibly rich and detailed world with his series. However, director Denis Villeneuve’s two popular films have only covered a portion of that extensive backstory. The second book, Dune: Messiah – which served as the basis for this movie – delves much further into that lore, notably introducing the concept of characters being resurrected. This isn’t a major plot reveal, as the possibility of returning from death has always been a part of the Dune universe, and Herbert created a particularly unique method for achieving it.

Dune’s Ghola Resurrection System, Explained

The world of Dune features several powerful groups that keep the galactic empire running smoothly. While the recent Dune films by Denis Villeneuve and the Dune: Prophecy series on HBO Max have highlighted the Bene Gesserit witches, two other key organizations are also central to the story: the Spacing Guild, who control interstellar travel, and Bene Tleilax, experts in genetic manipulation and improvement.

The Tleilaxu are famous for creating “Gholas” – essentially artificial people grown from the genetic material of someone who has died, even from just a single cell. Unlike clones, Gholas weren’t copies with existing memories. Instead, they were created as blank slates, conditioned to perform specific tasks, offering comfort to those grieving a loss. However, the true motives behind those tasks were often unclear.

Dune Director Teases the Pivotal Importance of Duncan Idaho’s Return

As you’ve probably guessed, Duncan Idaho, as we originally knew him, doesn’t return in Dune: Messiah. Instead, a recreated version of him – a ghola – is made and appears to be training the next generation of House Atreides fighters, just as he trained Paul.

Fans of Dune know that Duncan Idaho’s repeated resurrections and story become increasingly important as the series progresses. Like much of what involves House Atreides, Duncan’s ‘ghola’ – a recreated person – evolves into something far more significant than originally planned, largely due to his close connection with Paul Atreides and the entire House.

Director Denis Villeneuve has hinted at how Duncan Idaho will return in Dune: Part Three. He explained that Jason Momoa created a beloved character whose death was deeply felt, and bringing him back at a crucial moment will significantly impact Paul Atreides. Villeneuve suggests that Paul is grappling with who he is, and the return of a strong figure from his family’s past will be a powerful force in the story.

I’m so excited! Dune: Part Three is hitting theaters and IMAX on December 18th, and I can’t wait to talk about it – especially after seeing the new trailer! Come share your thoughts with me and everyone else over on the ComicBook Forum!
