How John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette Pulled Off a Secret Wedding

When John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette planned their wedding, their No. 1 priority was privacy.

Carolyn didn’t want a typical wedding venue, so John proposed Cumberland Island, a remote 18-mile-long island off the Georgia coast accessible only by boat or helicopter. He’d visited the island years earlier with a previous girlfriend, Christina Haag, and thought it would be perfect.

One surprising detail from the emotional March 5th episode of FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette is how genuinely touching the wedding vows were. The episode, starring Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon as the couple, beautifully portrays their commitment to each other, for better or for worse.

John and Carolyn managed to have a wonderfully private wedding ceremony on September 21, 1996, despite never publicly announcing their engagement. They exchanged vows at Cumberland’s First African Baptist Church with only 40 guests present.

After the candlelit ceremony, guests enjoyed a reception at Greyfield Inn, which is the only hotel and the only business of any kind on the island.

As someone who’s observed families for years, I’ve seen how tricky wedding planning can be, especially when there’s existing tension. In Carolyn Bessette’s case, while she was close to her sisters, she actually asked John F. Kennedy Jr.’s sister, Caroline, to be her maid of honor. It was a thoughtful move, a way to smooth things over with her sisters and show unity. Apparently, Caroline had some initial reservations about the marriage, and a very public disagreement between Carolyn and John in Washington Square Park only amplified those concerns. It just goes to show, even seemingly perfect couples face family dynamics that need navigating!

Caroline agreed, and her entire family joined the celebration. Her daughters, Rose and Tatiana Schlossberg, who were 8 and 6 at the time, walked down the aisle as flower girls. Their 3-year-old brother, Jack Schlossberg, was the ring bearer. John’s close friend and cousin, Anthony Radziwill, served as best man.

I remember when John and Carolyn were planning their wedding, they were so careful to keep it under wraps! They went to great lengths to avoid the press finding out, even using the office of his new George magazine to print the wedding programs. And John himself personally called all the important guests just a few weeks before the wedding to give them a heads-up and save the date for the celebration. It was all very hush-hush, but so exciting to follow!

RoseMarie Terenzio, his executive assistant, took care of many details, including a clever plan to create a distraction: she booked John and Carolyn flights to Ireland for that weekend.

Billy Noonan, a guest at the wedding, remembered in the 2019 TLC special JFK Jr and Carolyn’s Wedding: The Lost Tapes that they knew a wedding was the destination, but not the location. Although the flight plan listed Florida, John F. Kennedy Jr. told them they weren’t actually going there, leaving everyone unsure of where they were headed.

The owner of the Greyfield Inn started the marriage license process, and Camden County clerk Shirley Wise was sent to the airport to collect the signatures of the couple, without knowing their identities at the time.

Wise, who spoke with Carolyn on a private plane, explained to the New York Times that the application asked for a woman’s married name around the fifth or sixth question. He realized it was John Kennedy when she said she would be using Bessette-Kennedy.

Carolyn politely requested that we be quiet on the plane, explaining that she and her companions had made a significant effort to arrange their travel. Those involved with catering and the hotel staff were all required to sign confidentiality agreements.

Carolyn asked her friend and former Calvin Klein colleague, Narciso Rodriguez, who was then the creative director at Nino Cerruti, to design her dress. They did several fittings in Paris, and the final result was a stunning, $40,000 pearl-colored silk slip dress that Narciso gave her as a wedding gift – it quickly became famous.

After the wedding, Narciso told the New York Times the dress was very alluring. He explained that this was exactly the look they had both envisioned from the start.

Interestingly, the famously copied dress didn’t even have a zipper! The designer had to quickly make changes so Carolyn could actually put it on.

Honestly, everyone’s still talking about why Carolyn was so late to her wedding! There are different stories, and John, bless his heart, is always running late and misplacing things – he was late to the rehearsal dinner too, even forgetting his shirt! But the real reason for the two-hour delay? It all came down to a problem with the dress. It was a total disaster trying to get it sorted out, and that’s what really held things up.

Perhaps the most cherished moment – walking down the aisle lit by candlelight after a power outage at the church – only added to the magical feeling of the day. Carolyn’s hair, styled to perfection, was swept back into a simple bun held by a clip that once belonged to her mother-in-law, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley. Her colorist, Brad Johns, later told Vogue that he’d turned down her request to dye her hair black just before the wedding, sensing something significant was about to happen and that she wanted a fresh look.

John’s dark blue suit was designed by Gordon Henderson, a close friend of Carolyn’s, and he wore his late father’s watch. Carolyn finished her wedding look with a silk tulle veil, crystal-beaded satin Manolo Blahnik shoes, and long white gloves.

Oh my gosh, there was one photo released, just one! It was taken by Denis Reggie, the official wedding photographer, and it’s absolutely magical. It shows John gently kissing Jackie’s hand as they were leaving the church – it’s the most perfect, romantic moment captured forever, and I’ve stared at it a million times!

Looking back on the couple’s wedding, Denis recalled on TODAY in 2021, ahead of their 25th anniversary, that it was beautifully understated and intimate—a warm, loving weekend they executed perfectly. He felt there was something truly special about the moment he captured, saying you could see the surprise, joy, love, and romance in Carolyn’s expression.

He shared with Vanity Fair that Carolyn asked him to choose a photo that clearly showed her dress, as a close friend of hers had designed it.

In 2018, Narciso shared with Vogue that a particularly special request marked a high point in both his career and personal life: a loved one asked him to design her wedding dress.

Honestly, it was surprisingly quiet – the media was a no-show! We had a bit of a scare earlier with a helicopter flying around, but it turned out to be a false alarm. It was a welcome relief, actually, to have some peace and quiet.

A guest, speaking anonymously to the New York Times a few days after the event, said it was great that no reporters were present. They added, “We were thrilled we’d managed to trick everyone.”

Following the ceremony at Greyfield, the new couple shared their first dance to Prince’s “Forever in My Life.” They then cut into a beautiful three-tiered cake decorated with flowers and covered in vanilla buttercream frosting.

I was practically glued to every source I could find, and two days after the wedding, while Carolyn and John were off enjoying their honeymoon in Turkey, I swear, a memo went flying around the office at George – the subject line was just ‘Breaking News’! It felt like everyone knew something huge was happening, and I needed to find out what it was immediately.

According to George Matt Berman’s 2014 memoir, John once wrote to his colleagues saying he’d secretly gotten married while they were all working hard. He explained he had to be discreet for reasons they’d likely understand.

Let’s take a look at what the movie Love Story accurately portrayed – and what it invented – regarding John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s wedding, and other details.

In the movie Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advises Annette Bening (played by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit instead of the dress the designer chose for her, for the Bugsy premiere.

It’s not known if she created that outfit for future wife of Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was the main salesperson at Calvin Klein for famous clients like Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.

According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she expertly helped customers select clothes, offering advice on what suited them and how to create complete outfits. He noted that she generated millions of dollars in clothing sales over the years.

Oh my god, there’s this amazing moment in Love Story where you just see how brilliant Carolyn is! She’s basically telling Calvin – Alessandro Nivola, swoon! – that he needs to book Kate Moss for this campaign. It’s so clever, she’s already seeing what a huge deal Kate would be and guiding him to make the right move. It just proves she’s a total pro, even back then!

Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give him her phone number, reminding him that he can easily reach her at work.

You know, after everything, it really came down to him just being bored,” I explained to my friends at the club that night. Just then, Michael Bergin – we all affectionately called him ‘the sexy doorman’ – walked in. Noah Fearnley, as some of you know him, always had a way of showing up at the most interesting moments.

John unexpectedly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.

According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. He was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. John then invited Carolyn to join him at a gala, but she initially thought he was with another woman and declined when he later asked her to an after-party, as MJ Bettenhausen told Beller.

Carolyn and Michael, a model who previously worked as a hotel doorman, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship wasn’t very consistent, according to Beller’s book.

In his 2004 book, The Other Man, Bergin claimed he continued a sexual relationship with Carolyn even after she met John, and all the way until her death. However, according to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted this claim.

I’ll never forget the beginning of Carolyn and John’s story in Love Story. She was waiting at an Indian restaurant, patiently for twenty minutes, and was actually getting ready to leave when John finally arrived – riding up on his bicycle, of all things! It was such a sweet, slightly chaotic moment, and it really set the tone for their relationship.

He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they finished their long date, they discovered it had been stolen. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.

He said, “I thought I had more time,” as they reached her building’s entrance. She asked what he meant, and he leaned in to kiss her. He then wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied, “I had a really nice time tonight,” signaling the end of their date.

In real life, John and this person probably did go on a first date, and it’s possible he biked there and was a little late. However, the cozy scene of them connecting over drinks was likely staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) is at John’s apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen), that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.

He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, being strongly against it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers through a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.

John started sending Carolyn flowers, and later, when they ran into each other at an event, he confessed he was struggling because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel any hatred towards him.

The unexpected meeting was a striking way to reveal that the star of Splash was joining the cast of Love Story. However, the producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.

Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding the core of each character. She said it’s difficult to push specific storylines when working with actors, so they generally avoid doing that unless absolutely necessary.

According to Jacobson, Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story needs, but the writers still acknowledge her understanding of the celebrity world, something Carolyn lacks.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, forcing him to confront what he truly desires.

Daryl promised she would return for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, he was distracted by a fan asking for an autograph. He accidentally dropped the leash, and tragically, Hank was hit by a taxi and killed. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.

According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, shared that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic and was hit by a car while they were walking in Central Park in May 1994.

According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly worsened. He felt angry that Daryl had made him attend the dog’s funeral when his own mother was seriously ill with cancer.

In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, then collapses at home. This scene was created for dramatic impact, but it’s also meant to emphasize how severely ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other again at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.

They quickly connected and dated all summer, but their relationship faded after about two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie passed away that they finally became a lasting couple.

According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the couple’s relationship was actually quite turbulent, with more ups and downs than the show could realistically portray. However, the team decided to move the story forward, believing viewers wouldn’t want to watch a drawn-out, inconsistent romance, as he told USA Today.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.

Although it looked good on television, John was actually quite forgetful in real life, often misplacing his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.

Besides hinting at what’s to come, John also doesn’t mention the true nature of the party when he invites Carolyn. He tells her it’s a party at his sister Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s house, but it’s actually a formal dinner celebrating Caroline’s birthday.

When John’s behavior worries Carolyn, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that he’s just forgetful, and not intentionally bringing unexpected guests.

John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, the get-together at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment was more of a party than a formal dinner.

Let me tell you, witnessing true friendship is always a beautiful thing! I was with Anthony when Carolyn arrived, and it was just amazing. She walked into the room with this incredible glow – totally herself, unapologetically original, and just overflowing with warmth and affection. It was such an impulsive, lovely moment!

Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” as Carole remembered. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.

Contrary to initial impressions, Carolyn and Caroline actually hit it off right away, according to Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time. Someone who saw them having lunch described them as enjoying each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to get a date with him – that she was actively pursuing him. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was shocked and upset that he would think she’d do something like that, so she left.

After what felt like ages, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.

According to Beller, John received a letter outlining rumors about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships relatively early in their dating history. Following a summer romance in 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading it. Carolyn then refused his apologies for over a year.

John proposed to Carolyn while they were rowing a boat, shortly after she’d met his entire family for the first time in Hyannis Port. This included Ethel Kennedy, a strong and influential figure played by Jessica Harper.

Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.

In 1994, for Labor Day weekend, John brought Carolyn to his family’s vacation home. He did sign up to help with breakfast while they were there, but he did so without asking her to join him.

Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He proposed on a boat, and playfully told her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner.”

He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but in reality, John asked Jackie’s close friend Maurice Tempelsman to create a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring, often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.

According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before she responded to a proposal. While J. Randy Taraborrelli wrote in his 2019 book, American Prince, that she didn’t explicitly say yes, she did start wearing an engagement ring and told friends they were planning a wedding. However, in an oral history, RoseMarie Terenzio recalled Carolyn telling her they actually became engaged over the holiday weekend.

Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months leading up to their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.

I was really struck by a moment in Love Story where Kelly, played by Leila George, challenges Calvin after he tells her she can’t continue working for him. It happens right after a very public announcement – a New York Post cover screaming about JFK Jr.’s proposal – and he’s worried her personal life will interfere with her job. She really pushes back at that, and it felt so raw and real to me.

Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping things private.” Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”

The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, hinting that it would be their last time together – a clear sign they were breaking up.

As a longtime fan, I was so sad to hear that Calvin and Kelly separated back in August 1996. They put out a statement – Liz Smith reported on it at the time – saying they remained close friends and were choosing to live separately, hoping to resolve things respectfully. It was a difficult time, and sadly, their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.

At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than him.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a provocative image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.

Okay, so things got a little tricky with John and me. Honestly, he had to publicly say he didn’t propose – it wasn’t about the proposal itself, but about keeping the focus on the really big news about George. It was a tough call, and I wasn’t thrilled to have him address it that way, but the rumors about me turning him down were starting to steal the spotlight, and that just couldn’t happen.

Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for publicly denying John was engaged after a photo of Carolyn’s ring caused rumors, stated that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be a distraction, and that she didn’t mind not being there.

John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff believed this was an early indication of the challenges Carolyn would face in the relationship – a preview of what life with John would be like.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with Carolyn happily accepting John’s marriage proposal, despite their earlier conflict.

The highly publicized fight between the couple on February 25, 1996, became instantly iconic. Details like John seemingly taking Carolyn’s engagement ring, John crying on the curb, and their argument over the dog – with Carolyn famously declaring, “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!” – were widely reported and immediately recognizable to the public.

The show centers around an argument sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his proposal. He angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just accepted him, but they had actually been engaged for around five months. While Carolyn privately tries on the ring and seems open to the idea when they’re alone, she hadn’t formally said yes before the fight began.

In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because John’s friends were exploiting him.

I was so struck by something I read about Carolyn and John. Apparently, they were at a wedding and ended up sitting next to a reporter from the New York Times who was writing about the wedding in the ‘Vows’ section. According to what was written, Carolyn really felt it was a terrible thing to do to a friend. She definitely regretted the fight, but she was also upset with John. She explained she was trying to look out for him, to protect him from being used, and it hurt that he didn’t seem to appreciate it.

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.

Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that she’d lost the benefit of the doubt. She explained, as difficult as it would be, that men would hurt and frustrate her, and push her to her limits. Her advice was simple: don’t let them.

Ethel brought Carolyn to her home and, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, told her she needed to ignore the negativity and move forward.

According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once shared that life as a Kennedy wasn’t always simple. But the mother of eleven explained that she learned to cope by reminding herself every morning, ‘I am enough.’ It was a simple mantra, she said – just ‘I am enough.’ Over time, she realized that this self-acceptance was true, and that nothing – not even the pressures of being a Kennedy – could take that feeling away from her.

Ethel advised Carolyn to remain calm in public, as described in the book. She cautioned that these men were quick to anger and warned Carolyn not to let them provoke her into misbehaving where everyone could see.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about not being included in the wedding preparations.

Carolyn worries her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important because she doesn’t want to start her marriage with any unresolved resentment.

Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”

John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend fences. His sister had not only publicly blamed Carolyn for a scene in the park, but also taken it as a reason to call off the wedding. John believed this invitation was the best way to resolve the conflict.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal life was interfering with her work, and Calvin admitted he was surprised and a little disappointed to hear it.

He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she’d be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez – a former colleague – designing her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.

“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”

In the movie Love Story, Calvin learns about the dress because Carolyn was previously photographed with the designer Narciso Rodriguez and Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy quit her job before she started seriously planning her wedding.

Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her marriage. She expresses this worry privately to her daughter, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned for Carolyn. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded when around someone with such a powerful personality. Ultimately, she hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive when she needs him.

John had a private conversation where he told his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.

It’s unclear exactly what Ann said that night, but John’s friend, Robert Littell, recalled in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it could be detrimental to her daughter.

And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”

Littell remembered that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed a long time earlier. This meant the story in Love Story—where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding—was created to make the scene more romantic.

Carolyn had a major wardrobe mishap just before the event. She discovered Narciso’s dress, which didn’t have a zipper, needed to be pulled over her head – and she’d already had her makeup applied!

Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that getting Carolyn into her dress was incredibly difficult. She described it as if the dress was flowing over Carolyn’s body like cream, and Narciso was struggling to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the dress’s neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.

Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he also offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they and their partner are happy.

You know, when I’m styling clients – or even myself! – sometimes the outfit is so transformative, you have to start all over with hair and makeup. I remember reading about this in Beller’s Once Upon a Time, where the character Carolyn actually had to redo her whole look after she put on the dress – it completely changed the vibe!

The ceremony didn’t begin until 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles.
