How Karamo Brown Learned He Had 9-Year-Old Son After Losing Virginity

Karamo Brownhad a rather unconventional path to fatherhood.

The Queer Eye star didn’t find out he had a son, Jason “Rachel” Brown, until Jason was nine years old.

Karamo recently shared on the Jennifer Hudson Show that his son was conceived after he and a close female friend made a pact to experience intimacy together as teenagers.

He shared with Jennifer Hudson that he realized he was gay at age 14. Around that time, he and his close friend Stephanie made a quick decision to experience losing their virginity together—she wanted to, and he agreed.

She explained that it was a brief relationship from her past. Afterwards, she told the other person it wouldn’t happen again, and meant it – no hard feelings. She was confident in her own life’s direction, and the other person eventually moved to a different location.

Karamo explained that he lost touch with Stephanie because she moved before cell phones and the internet were common, and he never had her new contact information.

The reality star described enjoying her marriage and then explained she hadn’t seen the other woman again. She and director Ian Jordan had been together for ten years, but they ended their engagement in 2020.

Karamo’s life took an unexpected turn when he was 25. He received legal notices for child support for a nine-year-old he hadn’t known about. He later learned the child’s mother had been pregnant shortly after a brief encounter, and this was the result.

After leaving the show, he returned to Texas to be with his mother and handle some personal matters. Soon after, Karamo visited Stephanie and discovered what had really happened.

He explained that when she opened the door, she burst into tears and confessed, ‘I kept this secret because I hoped at least one of us could be happy.’

He went on to say that in that moment, they both felt like teenagers again. They shared a hug, a real embrace. That night marked the first time he met his son, and he described it as an instant feeling of wholeness, like a long-missing piece of himself had finally been found.

Karamo enjoyed fatherhood so much that he pursued full custody of his son, Jason, who is now 29, just six months after Jason’s birth.

Karamo shared his respect for her, both as a mother and a person, because she recognized his son needed a relationship with his father. He also acknowledged that a decision she made resulted in him losing valuable time with his son.

He explained, ‘I told them, “You’ve handled everything, now let me help.” Then, I was awarded full custody of my son and I raised him myself.’

Okay, so Jason’s dad, the one who’s, like, a really important cultural figure? He adopted Christian, Jason’s half-brother, a year ago, which is amazing! Apparently, he was really upset he hadn’t been around for so much of Christian’s life, but honestly? He just seemed so thankful to Stephanie for letting him be a dad to him. It’s just…so heartwarming, you know?

He understood why she made the decision she did, because it allowed him to focus on his education and provide for their future. He believes they all have good lives now because of that choice. He often thinks about how different things would be if they’d both become parents as teenagers, and he’s not sure where they’d be today.

Karamo is incredibly proud of his family and wants their story to encourage others to pursue their dreams, even when facing challenges.

I hope that when people hear my story, they realize their own dreams are achievable,” he shared with Parents magazine in 2018. “Considering my background – being the child of immigrants, growing up Black in the South, coming out as a teenager, and becoming a parent so young – many would have expected me to struggle. But here I am today, proof that anything is possible. If I could overcome those challenges, anyone can!”
