For Keke Palmer, the timing of The ‘Burbs felt like especially good fortune.
The Peacock series features a mom, who has a 2-year-old named Leodis, playing the role of Samira, a new mother. Samira and her friends in the suburbs start investigating a neighbor they believe may be a murderer. While the actress, age 32, isn’t a real-life detective, the show helped her reflect on her own experiences after having a child, as she co-parents her toddler with her ex, Darius Jackson.
Keke shared with TopMob News that playing a role allowed her to gain perspective on her own life. In a conversation with her co-star Jack Whitehall, she explained it was helpful to step back and observe the characters’ relationship, especially considering the challenges of reconnecting with yourself and your partner after having a baby. She emphasized that this struggle is common but often not discussed enough.
In fact, she sometimes wished her own life had imitated the art.
The actor explained that the show realistically portrays important discussions, saying she wished she’d had similar conversations herself. She and her co-star, Jack, often reacted to the storyline, wondering if it reflected their own experiences.
Just a few months after Keke became a mom, Jack also experienced parenthood for the first time. He and Roxy Horner welcomed their daughter, Elsie, in September 2023.

As a long-time fan, what Keke said really hit home for me. It perfectly captures that overwhelming feeling new parents have – constantly questioning if you’re doing things right, figuring out your place, and wondering if the timing is right with your partner. It’s that confusing headspace so many of us experience, and honestly, even parents who’ve been at it for years admit they remember feeling exactly the same way!
Keke believes the show The ‘Burbs handles these more complex themes in a unique and interesting manner, much like the 1989 Tom Hanks movie it’s based on.
She explained that the show does something she really appreciates – similar to classic television from creators like Norman Lear, it tackles important issues but does so in an entertaining way. She was particularly drawn to this aspect, as the show covers a lot of ground.

Honestly, watching Jack work with the twins who played our character’s child on set really got to me. It made me wish I could somehow bring that same warmth and joy into my own life – seeing them together was just beautiful, and I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to have that kind of family connection.
The comedian joked that raising twins is simpler because you can essentially swap them out when one gets fussy. ‘If one child is tired or crying, you just bring in the other!’ she explained. ‘If you could do that in real life, parenting would be a breeze.’
All episodes of The ‘Burbs will be available to stream on Peacock starting February 8th, making it perfect for a binge-watching session. Keep reading for more information on other upcoming shows!

Inspired by the 1989 film of the same name, The ‘Burbs is a modern story about a couple who move back to the husband’s hometown. Their peaceful life is disrupted when a mysterious new neighbor arrives, unearthing long-held secrets and bringing dangerous threats to their quiet suburban street.

Jack is back, but he’s in serious trouble! The clever thief, known as The Artful Dodger, is facing execution and is being pursued by Inspector Boxer, the new police officer in Port Victory. Even seeing the woman he loves, Lady Belle, could mean his death.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always inspired by women charting their own course, and Lady Belle is a perfect example. She’s incredibly driven to become a doctor, even when it means going against what’s expected of her and facing real risks. It’s a bold move, especially with her heart already on the line – talk about a high-stakes journey!
As Boxer and Jack both try to win Belle’s heart, the cunning Fagin pulls Dodger into their riskiest scheme yet, all while a murderer lurks nearby. This season promises excitement with fresh faces, settings, and even more twists, laughs, emotion, cleverness, and betrayal.
