How Kelly Clarkson, Brandon Blackstock Navigated Co-Parenting

In the course of their seven-year marriage, Brandon Blackstock gradually provided Kelly Clarkson with the security she longed for as a child. Despite ending their union in 2020, which was finalized two years later, the former couple remained steadfast in their commitment to co-parenting their children, River Rose (age 11) and Remington “Remy” Alexander (age 9), until Blackstock’s demise.

A representative for his family, including Savannah and Seth from his first marriage, confirmed Blackstock’s death on August 7 to NBC News. After a valiant battle with cancer that spanned over three years, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

The news of the 48-year-old’s passing surfaced less than 24 hours after Clarkson postponed the remainder of her August Las Vegas residency shows.

“Although I usually keep my personal life confidential,” Clarkson expressed on Instagram Aug. 6, “this past year, my children’s father has been ill, and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am genuinely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding.

In her conversation with TopMob News last September, Clarkson expressed, “I find it easy to be open and vulnerable as an individual, but things become challenging when it comes to other people’s lives. I have to carefully balance the question of ‘Is it appropriate?’ or ‘Can I share about my child with this person?'”

She further clarified, “When it comes to my personal heartbreak, there are certain aspects I discuss and others I don’t. It’s not that I’m uncomfortable talking about it, but rather, I’m mindful of whether other people are involved. It’s a matter of finding the right balance.

The strategy she adopted following her divorce filing in June 2020 is comparable to what she chose – avoiding disclosing specifics about their separation. As she shared with Entertainment Tonight in October, “There are many hearts involved here.” Later, she emphasized, “I am like an open book, but when it comes to my children, I become more of a protective mother than a public figure. So, I care about them infinitely more than anything else on this planet.

In essence, they both recognized a need to separate themselves from the situation. To put it mildly, Clarkson expressed in an interview with People magazine in 2024 that love isn’t always everlasting, and she didn’t intend this statement to sound gloomy. However, she also suggested that there’s a significant amount of pressure associated with the term “love.” At times, love means looking at someone and acknowledging, ‘This is not beneficial for you. This is not beneficial for me.’

In our household, we always keep things real with our children by discussing life’s highs and lows openly. Every evening when we cuddle up, I inquire, ‘Are you content? If not, what might make your day brighter?’ This was revealed during a 2024 episode of The Angie Martinez IRL Podcast by me, Clarkson. Sometimes they’ll share their feelings, especially over the past two years, and it pains me deeply when they express sadness about us not living under the same roof anymore. Yet, I encourage them to be truthful, even if it brings discomfort, as I don’t want them to hide their true emotions from me.

As a devoted admirer, I proudly proclaim, “Indeed, I value transparency above all else. I’m nurturing someone who embodies this trait. I yearn for unwavering honesty from you, too.

And she understands their POV.

The 43-year-old disclosed that she too comes from a separated family. She acknowledged their feelings, saying “I understand, that really stinks, but we’ll figure it out together.” She emphasized to them that they are deeply loved by both parents. In her opinion, it’s important to communicate with them without expecting them to be mature beyond their years, but also not dismissing their powerful emotions as insignificant.

Regardless of their experiences, Clarkson and Blackstock held a special place in each other’s hearts. She frequently fields this question from her children: “Don’t you love him anymore?” To which she honestly replies, “I’m not sure if love can ever truly disappear.

And neither will Blackstock’s legacy. Read on a for a look back at his life in pictures…
