Eric Dane understood his daughters’ point of view.
Before passing away on February 19th at age 53 after a year-long struggle with ALS, the Grey’s Anatomy actor spoke about how his daughters, 15-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia (with Rebecca Gayheart), would remember him.
In an interview for the Netflix series Famous Last Words, which aired shortly after his death on February 20th, he explained how people would likely describe him as someone who reacted strongly to things. He clarified that his father was also reactive, and didn’t see it as a bad trait, noting that many of his earliest memories involved reacting to situations – like frustrating traffic, for example.
You know, people who really know me would probably describe me as someone who’s been through a lot and come out stronger. I’m definitely resilient! But beyond that, I think they’d say I lead with love. I really try to be kind, understanding, and someone people can truly rely on. And honestly, being a good dad is the most important thing to me.
The Euphoria actor shared some heartwarming memories of traveling with his daughters throughout the years.
I’ve been so lucky to do a lot of traveling with my family, and we’ve seen some truly amazing places. One trip that really stands out was when we went to Europe. I’ll never forget driving through the French countryside – we had the kids in the back of this tiny, hilarious rental car and just sped along, soaking it all in. It was an incredible experience!
You know, Eric did the funniest thing! He just started speaking with a perfect French accent, and it lasted for a good fifteen minutes. He couldn’t explain it at all – it just came out of nowhere! It was so convincing, it was hilarious.
When interviewer Brad Falchuk realized the actor was making his family laugh, the actor shared that making people laugh—and laughing himself—was his favorite thing to do.

As a longtime fan, I was really touched when he opened up about how he parents. He explained that his divorce from Rebecca back in 2018, after so many years together, definitely made things more challenging for their kids and how they all adjusted as a family.
He believes reliability is the most important trait someone can have. While he admits he hasn’t always been perfect at it, he’s always been there when it really counted. He also shared that he and his children’s mother are no longer a couple, though they remain close friends.
Eric explained that living far apart meant they missed out on a lot of time together. He prioritized being present as much as possible, especially for important events. He’s never missed one of Billie’s ballet recitals, and while he’s seen many performances of The Nutcracker—noting some parts are lovely but the show itself is very long—he’s always made the time to be there.
He also shared his love for Rebecca, who decided to stop divorce proceedings last year after Eric was diagnosed with ALS.

Eric explained that he remains a constant presence in his family’s lives, regardless of distance. He and Rebecca still care for each other very much, but have realized they’re better off not living together. He emphasized that his love for Rebecca is profound and enduring, and that she will always be the mother of his children.

Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart have always kept the details of how they met private, with Dane jokingly suggesting it’s not a very exciting story.
He told Flaunt magazine in 2008 that it all started with a simple question: “Want to go out?” She said yes, and ten months later, they were married.

Less than one year after they began dating, the couple exchanged vows in Las Vegas.

Following Dane’s announcement that he was departing the TV series The Last Ship because of his struggle with depression, Gayheart used Instagram to publicly express her support for him.
“Way back when I met my Monday man crush,” Gayheart captioned a throwback photo of the couple.

When filing for divorce, Gayheart stated that she and her husband had irreconcilable differences. She requested financial support and shared custody of their daughters, Billie and Georgia.
The couple announced after 14 years of marriage that they’ve decided to separate. In a statement to TopMob News, they shared that they remain friends and will continue to work together to raise their two daughters, who are their top priority.
Despite never officially divorcing, Dane shared in 2019 with Entertainment Tonight that he and his ex-partner remained friends and successfully co-parented their two children. He explained, “It’s not complicated…it doesn’t have to be.”

Ten years after a nude video featuring former Miss Teen USA Kari Ann Peniche was leaked online, Dane spoke about the controversy for the first time in a recent interview.
He recently revisited a past statement he made about the incident, and firmly believes he did nothing wrong. ‘I’ve been thinking about that answer a lot,’ he told Glamour. ‘Looking back, it wasn’t a mistake at all. It involved three adults who all agreed, including my wife, so I wasn’t doing anything wrong.’
Looking back at what I said, I realize I was probably responding to the hints about drug use that came up in the video. It seems my earlier comments were most likely connected to that.
When asked if it was a mistake, the former Grey’s Anatomy star said they didn’t believe they did anything illegal or influenced anyone improperly. They described the situation as simply three people sharing a bath.
He finished by saying he stood by everything he’d done and didn’t apologize for any part of his life. He felt content with all of his experiences, and had no regrets whatsoever.
When the tape became public in 2009, Dane and Gayheart sued Gawker Media for $1 million, claiming copyright infringement. The case was eventually settled for a substantial amount – over $100,000.

Rumors of a rekindled romance began when the couple traveled to Europe with their two daughters. The actress, known for her role in Jawbreaker, posted photos from the trip, including one of Dane playfully posing with their girls.
“This is us,” Gayheart captioned the Instagram post. “Family vacay 2022.”
The group shared another photo from their European trip, this one taken on a Paris street with everyone smiling. She captioned the picture on Instagram, “A quick stop in Paris!”
The group traveled along the coast to St. Tropez, and Gayheart shared updates from their trip on her Instagram Stories. She posted a picture of the group with a friend, captioning it “My people.”

While she filed for divorce in 2018, Dane and Gayheart kicked off the New Year as one big family.
Actors Jacob Elordi and Shannen Doherty were seen holding hands as they stepped off a boat with their two daughters during a family vacation.

Gayheart filed to dismiss her divorce petition, seven years after submitting the papers.
