How Long DC Universe Is Planned Out After Superman Revealed (& It’s Exciting)

This past weekend, Superman gracefully flew into cinemas and swiftly seized control of the box office. Kicking off the freshly formed DC Universe, the film raked in an impressive $217 million at the global box office during its opening weekend. In light of the movie’s triumphant premiere, David Zaslav – CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery – shared some insights about the upcoming ventures from the DC Universe and DC Studios, led by co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Although Zaslav commended Gunn’s vision in Superman, he also disclosed to the press that the DC Studios has already planned out the DC Universe for the next ten years.

Over the weekend, I found myself immersed in the world of Superman as James Gunn’s creativity and ambition breathed life onto the silver screen. To put it simply, Superman took flight! This is just the beginning, as within the next year alone, DC Studios will premiere Supergirl and Clayface in cinemas, and unveil Lanterns on HBO Max. This is all part of a daring 10-year plan that paints a crystal-clear vision for DC. The energy is palpable, and I’m absolutely thrilled about what the future holds!

I had the pleasure of being part of the audience for James Gunn’s “Superman,” featuring David Corenswet as our iconic hero. This remarkable film garnered an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a promising beginning for the DC Universe. As one of the first projects announced when Gunn and Safran joined as co-heads of DC Studios at Warner Bros. Discovery, I was initially apprehensive about a new Superman, considering the anticipation for a “Man of Steel” sequel with Henry Cavill. However, Corenswet’s performance in the film won over both his predecessor and global audiences alike after its release.

Coming up next from DC Studios is “Supergirl,” a film where Milly Alcock steps into the leading role. Craig Gillespie is directing this project based on a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Notably, Jason Momoa, who was previously Aquaman, will portray Lobo – a character he’s eagerly anticipated playing on-screen. Joining him in the movie are David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Alice Hewkin as Sklarian Raider, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. After “Supergirl” hits the big screen, prepare for “Clayface,” starring Tom Rhys Harries.

In simple terms, here are two big-screen projects, Supergirl and Clayface, that have been confirmed by Gunn and Zaslav. Meanwhile, the studio is actively working on multiple TV series. For instance, Lanterns, a show where Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre portrays John Stewart, has already started production. This series is reminiscent of True Detective and will bring Nathan Fillion back as Guy Gardner on television.

Other ventures, such as a fresh installment of Wonder Woman and The Brave and the Bold, have been declared as works in progress. Gunn and Safran appear to favor a meticulous approach with their upcoming projects, making sure they are prepared for production before proceeding. The studio has temporarily halted work on Sgt. Rock, but it hasn’t been scrapped; instead, it’s been postponed. As for what Gunn and Safran will reveal next, DC enthusiasts can look forward to the future with anticipation, knowing that there is a well-thought-out strategy in place for the coming years.
