The new season of Scrubs is currently available on ABC and Hulu, and fans are thrilled to have the show back. This season (Season 10) continues the story years after the original series ended, picking up as if it’s happening in real-time. However, the latest episode revealed surprising details about Dr. J.D. Dorian’s past, which has led to questions about how this new season fits with the show’s overall story.
Scrubs Just Confirmed J.D. and Elliot Had A Child Together

The latest season of Scrubs began by showing that J.D. and Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) had married, hoping for a happily ever after. However, their marriage didn’t last, and they divorced. J.D. then left Sacred Heart Hospital to become a doctor who makes house calls to elderly patients. Now that he’s returned to Sacred Heart, J.D. and Elliot are trying to work together again, attempting to be mature co-parents despite the awkwardness.
Many viewers pointed out that in the Season 10 premiere, J.D. explains he took the concierge position so he could be around his coworkers – whom he refers to as his “kids” – more often.
In the fourth episode, “My Poker Face,” J.D. casually mentions his son, Ollie, will be visiting for the weekend. This sparked a realization for longtime viewers of Scrubs: J.D. already had a son named Sam with Dr. Kim Briggs earlier in the series (Season 7, Episode 2, “Hard Labor”). This meant Ollie’s mother could only be one person: Elliot.
It’s not hard to believe J.D. and Elliot might have had a child before their divorce. However, by making that part of the official story in Scrubs Season 10, the show has actually created the same plot holes it was trying to avoid.
Did Scrubs Just Confirm Season 9 as Canon?

Season 9 of Scrubs is often considered separate from the original series. Creator Bill Lawrence had already concluded the show after Season 8, but the network, ABC, asked him to continue it. This ninth season, titled Scrubs: Med School, essentially functions as a spin-off. It follows Dr. Chris Turk and Dr. Perry Cox as they leave Sacred Heart Hospital to become teachers at the fictional Winston University, while J.D. appears in only half of the season’s 13 episodes. The season introduced a largely new cast of characters, including doctors and medical students, played by actors like Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco.
Season 9 of Scrubs aired for only a few months, from December 2009 to March 2010, before the show was cancelled. This new direction was a big change, and it led to the series’ lowest viewership ever, with fans and critics disagreeing about whether continuing the show was a good idea.
When a tenth season of Scrubs was announced, it was initially stated that it would continue directly after season eight, effectively ignoring season nine. However, season nine included a storyline where J.D. and Elliot were expecting a baby, and the timing of that baby’s birth doesn’t match up with the age of their son, Ollie, in the new season. This creates confusion about how season nine fits into the overall story.
TV Line interviewed Aseem Batra, the showrunner for Scrubs Season 10, and he confirmed that viewers won’t see J.D.’s children in the new episodes. Originally, scenes featuring the kids were planned, but were ultimately cut to save time. Batra explained that bringing back familiar faces and the hospital setting was a priority for creator Bill Lawrence. The team decided they didn’t want the show to feel like it was shifting between a family sitcom and a medical drama, comparing it to Everybody Loves Raymond – the focus wasn’t meant to be on the characters’ children.
With the continued positive attention surrounding a potential tenth season of Scrubs, there’s a chance we could see more of the Dorian children. Producer Neil Batra has suggested that excluding them from Season 10 might have been a mistake.
