Mariah Carey has a new vision of love.
Having shared the stage with her and her former spouse Nick Cannon‘s daughter, Monroe “Roe” Cannon, for many years during her shows, the famous singer is now supporting the 14-year-old in following her passion for music.
“My daughter loves music,” Mariah shared with Jimmy Fallon on the September 29th installment of The Tonight Show. “She used to join me onstage during my Christmas concerts, but I’m not sure if she’ll be doing that this year. I’m encouraging her to pursue her own path, and I believe she wants to, so it’s a possibility.”
It looks like Roe is likely to follow in her mother’s footsteps, but her twin brother, Moroccan “Roc” Cannon, is forging his own way.
I’m telling you, my son is completely hooked on streaming and gaming! I’ve even made a few cameos on his live streams, as I was explaining, and honestly, it’s everything to him. It’s not just a hobby; it’s all the things he cares about!
However, Roc has also demonstrated his musical abilities over time. For example, in December 2024, he joined his sister and mother on tour with the “Vision of Love” singer for her Christmas shows. During these performances, he played the drums for renditions of classic songs like “Deck the Halls” and “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”

My son is really into streaming and gaming,” Mariah said, having described her appearances on his live broadcasts, “and just everything else, really.”
Despite his work behind the scenes, Roc has also demonstrated his own musical abilities. For example, in December 2024, he joined his sister and mother on tour with the “Vision of Love” singer, performing on the drums during their performances of Christmas carols.
“He and Roe are incredibly talented!” Mariah told TopMob News in 2022. “To be honest, the way they sing is just gorgeous, and I’m really grateful they got that gift from me.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Mariah Carey’s journey, and it’s been fascinating to hear her talk about life with her twins! She’s opened up about co-parenting with Nick Cannon – they were married for six years before splitting in 2014 – and she’s shared a lot about her approach to raising them. It’s really insightful to hear her thoughts on parenting and how she navigates it all. You can find more details about her experiences here.
“Do I come across as unkind? No,” Mariah explained to TopMob News in August 2024. “Am I easygoing? Most likely. I simply don’t want to be seen as the gloomy person that others avoid.”
Even so, she feels thankful for the people her children are becoming-and relieved that they aren’t growing up to be just like she was when she was young.
She playfully said, “I don’t think they’re bad or evil at all, not like I used to be.” She continued, “They’re genuinely good kids-they’re very smart and funny-and, well, I’m their mommy.”
Mariah has been open about how challenging she could be as a child, and she’s revealed a lot about her life over time. Keep reading to discover more…
In addition to talking about what she enjoys, the Grammy winner has also discussed raising her twins with Cannon-who she separated from in 2014 after a six-year marriage-and explained her approach to parenting.
“Do I come across as mean? No,” Mariah explained to TopMob News in August 2024. “Am I easygoing? Likely. I simply don’t want to be seen as the gloomy person nobody wants to be around.”

She playfully said she didn’t see them as bad or evil, like she once was. “They’re really good kids, and they’re very smart and funny-and, you know, I’m the mommy,” she added.

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 (though the exact date is sometimes questioned) to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Hickey. Patricia’s family disapproved of her marriage to a man of African-American and Afro-Venezuelan heritage and disowned her. Mariah’s parents divorced when she was 3 years old.
2. The name Maria originates from the song “They Call the Wind Maria” featured in the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon. While the spelling differs, the pronunciation remains identical.
3. Growing up, her family – consisting of two older siblings – experienced racist attacks due to her parents being in an interracial marriage. These attacks included the poisoning of their dogs and the destruction of a car by explosives.
“That’s how it all started,” Patricia explained to Oprah Winfrey in a 1999 interview alongside her daughter. “We were having dinner one evening when a gunshot came through the window. Thankfully, the kids weren’t in that room at the time.”
4. When Mariah Carey was a student at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, she became known as “Mirage” due to frequently skipping classes. Her guidance counselor, John Garvey, was very worried about her absences, as detailed in Marc Shapiro‘s unofficial 2001 biography.
Garvey explained in the book that you could argue with her endlessly, but it wouldn’t change anything. According to him, she would dismiss your concerns, stating that her ambition to become a rock star was her priority. Carey, however, responded, “I understand why they wanted me to focus on school; they simply hadn’t seen me perform.”
5. During the creation of her third album, Music Box, Mariah Carey started a relationship with Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. They had a grand wedding on June 5, 1993. However, they later separated in 1997. Carey explained that his controlling behavior and increasing disagreements about her music were the main reasons their relationship fell apart.
As someone who’s spent years observing relationships and personal growth, I’ve seen firsthand how damaging control can be. On my show, Mariah’s World, I shared a difficult part of my past. I was in a relationship where someone held a lot of power over me – he was significantly older and really wanted to isolate me. It got to the point where I needed *permission* just to leave the house. Honestly, there were times I genuinely didn’t think I’d ever be able to break free. It was a really tough situation, and I wanted to be open about it because no one should feel trapped like that.
6. While still in high school, Mariah Carey wrote her very first song. Titled “Here We Go ‘Round Again,” she’s said the song – which was included on a four-song demo tape – has a sound reminiscent of Motown music.
7. After finishing high school, she moved to a small, one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, sharing it with four other women who were also students. To support herself while studying cosmetology and chasing her music ambitions, she worked both as a waitress and at a coat check.
8. When Carey was just 2 years old, she amazed her mother-who was a vocal coach and sometimes sang opera-by perfectly copying her operatic style. She started voice lessons at age 4, and quickly developed a remarkable voice with a range of five octaves-an incredibly rare ability.
Oh my gosh, you won’t believe how it all happened! After Brenda K. Starr – seriously, a total icon – started becoming a big pop star, I somehow got to tag along with her to this Christmas party CBS Records was throwing. It was insane! Brenda was like, ‘You HAVE to bring your demo,’ and I almost died. She seriously convinced me! Then, get this, the tape actually landed in the hands of the head of Columbia Records, Tommy Mottola! Can you even?! He listened to just two songs – TWO! – and immediately wanted to sign her. I was losing my mind, it was the best night ever!
10. Mariah Carey’s first album, simply titled Carey, came out on June 12, 1990. It led to two Grammy Awards, including the award for Best New Artist. This also made her the first artist since the Jackson 5 to have the first four songs from an album all reach the top of the charts. More information is available online.
11. Marilyn Monroe has always held a special place in Carey’s heart. In 1999, she spent more than $600,000 to purchase the legendary actress’s white baby grand piano at a Christie’s auction.
I remember when she first met Nick Cannon – it was on the set of her “Bye Bye” music video back in 2008. I was so excited for her! They started dating pretty quickly, and then, just two months later, they were married! It was a really secret ceremony, held in the Bahamas on April 30th. Sadly, things didn’t last, and they separated in 2014.
As a lifestyle expert, I always find love stories fascinating, and Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s is no exception. Despite experiencing a heartbreaking miscarriage early in their marriage, they were blessed with twins in 2011 – Moroccan and Monroe. It’s so sweet how they chose the names! Monroe is a beautiful tribute to Mariah’s lifelong idol, Marilyn Monroe, and Moroccan gets its name from the unique décor of the room where Nick proposed – how romantic is that?
14. In 2008, Mariah Carey faced criticism after performing at a New Year’s Eve concert for the family of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. She later expressed regret for taking part, stating she felt horrible and embarrassed. Her representative, Cindi Berger, announced in March 2011 that the proceeds from her then-upcoming song, “Save The Day,” would be given to charities working to promote human rights. The song was ultimately released in 2020.
In 2001, she had a strange appearance on TRL. She showed up unexpectedly, wheeled in an ice cream cart, and took off her clothes. Following this, she spent two weeks in a mental hospital in Connecticut, explaining that she had broken down due to being incredibly tired.
In 2018, she shared that she had been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder around that time, but had chosen to keep it to herself. She explained to People magazine, “I’m now at a point where I feel comfortable talking about my challenges with bipolar II disorder.” She expressed hope that society could overcome the shame associated with mental health struggles, saying, “It can be very lonely going through things on your own. But it doesn’t need to control who you are, and I won’t let it control me.”
Only a few months after leaving the institution, Carey released Glitter. Unfortunately, both the movie and its soundtrack failed commercially, leading Virgin Records to pay her $50 million to terminate her contract. She then signed with Island Records in early 2002 and, as part of the deal, created a new record label called MonarC.
17. Glitter isn’t the only movie Carey has been in. She received very positive feedback for her role as a social worker in a 2009 film called Precious, directed by her friend Lee Daniels, which won several awards. In 2013, she also starred in another film by Daniels, The Butler, where she played Hattie Pearl, the mother of the main character, Cecil Gaines, who was portrayed by Forest Whitaker.
Up until 2017, Mariah Carey’s song “One Sweet Day,” featuring Boyz II Men, held the record for the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for 16 weeks between 1995 and 1996. It initially tied with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s “Despacito,” which also featured Justin Bieber. However, in the summer of 2019, Lil Nas X‘s “Old Town Road” eventually broke the record.
19. Page Six reports that Mariah Carey’s two Jack Russell terriers travel exclusively in first class, each accompanied by a dedicated staff member. The reason? They reportedly can’t stand being near each other.
20. After experiencing a career comeback with the 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey started appearing in advertisements and endorsement deals for the first time. This began with commercials for Intel Centrino computers. In 2006, she signed a deal with Gillette’s “Legs of a Goddess” campaign and, according to reports, insured her legs for $1 billion.
Carey met Australian businessman James Packer through a longtime friend, director Brett Ratner, at a film premiere in Aspen, Colorado. They became engaged in January 2016.
I was so excited when I heard that the billionaire, who teamed up with Ratner to create RatPac Entertainment, proposed! Apparently, he used a massive 35-carat ring. Sadly, it didn’t last. By October, they’d called off the engagement, and it seemed like they both hinted the split happened because of problems with each other. It was a bit of a messy situation, honestly, with both sides implying the other was the issue. I was really rooting for them, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
22. Mariah Carey’s well-known 1994 album Merry Christmas has sold more than 18 million copies globally, making it the top-selling Christmas album ever. Twenty-five years after it came out, in late December 2019, her popular song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, and it broke several records – including the record for taking the longest time to reach the top. This accomplishment not only increased her record as the solo artist with the most No. 1 hits on the Hot 100, but it also made her the only artist ever to have a No. 1 song in four different decades.
23. Patti LaBelle is her godmother, and the famous R&B singer has said she used to playfully spank her goddaughter when she was younger.
After my split with Nick Cannon, I was so happy to find love again with Bryan Tanaka. It was a really special time, and thankfully, the cameras for my show, Mariah’s World, were there to capture the beginning of our relationship. It’s fun looking back at those early moments!
25. She does not know Jennifer Lopez. So stop asking her.
