As a big fan of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, I was really thrown when thinking about Matthew Lillard’s character and the sequel. He played a key role in the first film, helping Josh Hutcherson’s character get the security job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. But then, it turned out he was the villain! So, seeing him potentially back for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a little confusing, considering how the first movie ended.
Matthew Lillard portrays William Afton, the primary villain in the game series. In a climactic scene, he attempts to kill Mike while wearing an animatronic suit, but the suit’s internal mechanisms malfunction, causing his gruesome death. However, for those familiar with the games, this isn’t truly the end of William Afton’s story, which is why Matthew Lillard returns to the role.
William Afton Becomes Springtrap In Five Nights At Freddy’s
Both the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and the games feature William Afton as a serial killer. He helped start Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and used it as a place to find people to harm. In the movie, Mike goes to the abandoned pizzeria to uncover the truth about the children William killed, who are now haunting the animatronic robots.
Both the movie and the games show William using the Springtrap costume to disguise himself as an animatronic, allowing him to lure and kill his victims. However, the suit’s internal mechanisms failed, trapping and killing him. The first film concludes with his agonizing death inside the suit, but his story doesn’t end there.
In Five Nights at Freddy’s, the animatronic characters are haunted by the spirits of children who have died. Given how wicked William Afton was, it was inevitable he’d find a way to return. The games reveal his remains are trapped inside the Spring Bonnie suit—he’s physically dead, but his malicious spirit continues to control the animatronic.
Even after Springtrap’s defeat, William Afton came back as Scraptrap, a redesigned version that looked similar and was just as malicious.
What We Know About Matthew Lillard’s Role In Five Nights At Freddy’s 2
William Afton is predicted to return as the main villain in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. This time, he’s potentially even more threatening as a spirit possessing Springtrap, now that he’s likely deceased. The story also promises a more personal touch with the reunion of actors Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, who previously starred together in Scream.
I’m so excited to hear that Ulrich will be playing Henry Emily! He’s such a crucial character in the Five Nights at Freddy’s story, being the co-founder of Freddy Fazbear’s alongside William Afton. It’s heartbreaking knowing his daughter, Charlotte, was William’s first victim, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how Henry steps up to help Mike finally put an end to all the darkness.
