For Matthew McConaughey, acting has become a family affair.

55-year-old actor Matt McConaughey reminisced about acting alongside his son Levi McConaughey, then 17, and his mother Kay McConaughey, aged 93, during the world premiere of their film “The Lost Bus” at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

During an interview on September 5, Matthew shared with Francesca Amiker from TopMob News an exciting revelation about his son. He mentioned that they were together in certain scenes, and it’s quite thrilling for him to be involved alongside his son in the same projects. Matthew went on to explain that he was unaware his son had any interest in performing as his mother has always been a performer herself.

Due to some doubt about whether his son was truly committed to pursuing an acting career, the star of “Interstellar” – accompanied by his wife Camila Alves at the red carpet event – initially declined Levi’s pleas for an audition to play his on-screen son in a project.

He inquired about reading a part four times, which Matthew remembered. Not long after, he proposed this to the casting director. They eventually filmed him reading for the role, and Matthew was impressed, commenting, ‘He can captivate the screen, and he has an instinct for it.’

So, they decided to put the decision in the hands of director Paul Greengrass.

Matthew stated that the document was forwarded to the director with a suggestion: ‘Let’s anonymize my last name for the director if we proceed with this.’ Upon reviewing it, Paul exclaimed, ‘That’s the boy!’

How did Levi respond upon securing his first part in the intense wildfire drama? Quite simply, he was utterly astonished.

He shared with TopMob that he felt confident about his audition, expressing “Alright, this is promising,” but didn’t anticipate securing the role afterward.

He said, ‘I’ve never acted before, particularly at this scale, and that’s why I received the call.’ Continuing, he recalled, ‘Once, my father got a call, and he handed me the phone. I asked, ‘Is everything okay?’ Little did I know it was director Paul Greengrass on the line, who said, ‘Hey there, would you be interested in traveling to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to play the role of Shaun?’ I was utterly surprised!

Initially trying to maintain composure, the teenager found it difficult to hide his feelings for long; eventually, he was overpowered by emotions.

He remembered saying something like “Oh, that sounds fantastic! Thanks a lot. This is wonderful,” during the call, trying hard not to cry. But as soon as he hung up, tears started streaming down his face.
