World Cup players are scoring goals and making bank.
The FIFA World Cup begins on June 11th, uniting players from across the globe in cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This year’s tournament will be the largest ever, featuring 104 matches leading up to the final game on July 19th.
The matches are sure to excite fans, but FIFA reports that the 48 teams participating will also compete for a total of $655 million in prize money, distributed over six rounds.
The further a team advances in the competition, the more money they’ll win. Teams eliminated in the group stage will receive $9 million, while those knocked out in the next round will earn $11 million.
Teams finishing in 9th place will receive $15 million, while teams from 5th to 8th place will each earn $19 million. Teams that reach the semi-finals will receive increasingly larger payouts: fourth place gets $27 million, third place gets $29 million, and the second-place team will earn $33 million.
Naturally, the world cup winners will receive by far the biggest payout, taking home a whopping $50 million.
In addition to the teams’ winnings, every team that made it to the tournament automatically earn $1.5 million in preparation costs.
This year, teams competing in the World Cup will receive a record amount of financial support – a full 50% more than they received in 2022.
Players competing in the World Cup will also receive payment from their national soccer organizations, usually as a bonus for each game they play, though the exact amount differs depending on the team.

While winning the World Cup doesn’t usually come down to money for most players, it’s the prestige and pride that truly matter.
“We’ve beaten the last champions, it’s a joy I cannot put into words,” Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul told Reuters after they won the World Cup in 2022. “I’m proud of being born in Argentina and today we are on top of the world.”
