How Old the Mario Brothers Are in Nintendo Games
Nintendo has never officially revealed the ages of Mario and Luigi. They’re designed to be timeless characters that appeal to all ages. While they appear to be adult men, they aren’t defined by a specific age and seem consistently mature and experienced.
I find Baby Mario and Baby Luigi a bit confusing. They originally showed up in *Yoshi’s Island* and have popped up in several other games since, like the *Mario Kart* series and various sports titles. It’s unclear if these baby characters are the same Mario and Luigi as babies, or entirely separate characters, and Nintendo hasn’t given us a definitive answer.
It’s strange that baby versions of characters have shown up with the adults. What makes it even more confusing is that *Mario Tennis Fever* actually depicts Mario and Luigi transforming into babies. This is odd because Nintendo hasn’t clearly explained it, especially considering the *Legend of Zelda* series often shows Link at different ages or stages of his life.
The “25 Years Old” Confusion
Although Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed their ages in the games, a popular fan theory claims Mario and Luigi are 25 years old. This idea started with an interview with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, where he said Mario was “born” 25 years ago. Many fans took this as confirmation of their age, effectively ending the discussion.
The truth is quite different from what people think. Miyamoto wasn’t revealing the brothers’ ages, but referencing when the *Super Mario Bros.* game first came out. That original game, the first to star Mario, was released in 2010. So, his comment wasn’t a direct answer to the age question, but a playful way to mark Mario’s anniversary. Despite this, the idea that Mario is 25 years old has stuck with fans ever since.
Why Mario & Luigi Stay Ageless
It really doesn’t matter how old Mario and Luigi are. Nintendo doesn’t see its characters as being limited by age or a strict timeline, unlike many other game developers. They consider Mario and Luigi timeless icons who can fit into any story or time period without causing continuity problems. They’ve even shown up as both babies and adults in the same game, and it works perfectly.
Mario and Luigi appeal to everyone, young and old, because their ages are never specifically defined. This allows children to see themselves in the characters and adults to enjoy the games without feeling like they’re meant for a younger audience. For me, they truly represent the joy of play and adventure, no matter how old you are.
It’s probably best we never find out how old Mario and Luigi are, and that’s fine with me. Their ages don’t really matter – I just want to enjoy playing the games. Story isn’t a big focus in the Mario series, so it doesn’t bother me as much as not knowing the ages of characters like Link or Samus, whose games have more complex storylines. Mario and Luigi are all about simple fun – running, jumping, and having a good time.
