How Old Maul Is In Shadow Lord, And His Age In The Phantom Menace, Clone Wars, & When He Dies

People who love big franchises like Marvel and Star Wars often want to know the exact order of events and when each story takes place. These universes have grown so large that keeping track of the timeline – and characters’ ages – is really helpful for understanding everything. Knowing when things happen and how old characters are meant to be makes the movies and shows make more sense, especially for characters who appear in many different projects, as it allows us to see them grow and change over time.

Darth Maul is a Star Wars character who has appeared in many stories over the years. He first showed up as a villain in the prequel movies, seemingly killed off at the end of The Phantom Menace. However, he was brought back in the Clone Wars animated series. The creators really expanded his story there, turning him into a complex and sympathetic character. Now, his story continues in this year’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, and fans are curious about where it fits into the larger Star Wars timeline and how old Maul is supposed to be.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been curious about how old Darth Maul actually is throughout all his appearances! The Star Wars timeline is a little tricky, using the Battle of Yavin as its starting point, but I’ve figured out his age in everything he’s been in, right up to his final moments in Star Wars Rebels.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – 22 Years Old

As a longtime Star Wars fan, I always appreciate when details like this come to light. According to a 2015 issue of Star Wars Jedi Master magazine, Darth Maul was born way back in 54 BBY. That means, when we first meet him in The Phantom Menace, which takes place in 32 BBY, he was around 22 years old. It’s fascinating to consider these details, especially knowing that The Phantom Menace is set over thirty years before the original A New Hope.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – 34 & 35 Years Old

Darth Maul appeared to die in The Phantom Menace, but he unexpectedly returned in The Clone Wars. It was revealed he actually survived his fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi and had become consumed by anger and a desire for revenge. His return is first shown in the episode “Brothers” from Season 4, which takes place 20 years before the Battle of Yavin, making Maul 34 years old at that time.

Darth Maul’s age isn’t consistent throughout The Clone Wars. He’s 35 years old when he reappears in the Season 5 premiere, “Revival,” which takes place in 19 BBY. All of his other appearances in the series also happen during that same year.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord – About 37 or 38 Years Old

The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, is the latest installment featuring the character Maul. It’s set just after the events of The Clone Wars in the official Star Wars timeline. In the first episode, titled “Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge,” Maul is likely around 37 years old.

We’re estimating the timeline for Shadow Lord because its exact placement hasn’t been officially confirmed. The official Star Wars website states the first season starts a few years after Order 66, which occurred in 19 BBY during Revenge of the Sith. Considering this, it’s likely Shadow Lord begins around 17 or 16 BBY – a reasonable timeframe following the Clone Wars.

The animated series Maul – Shadow Lord is getting a second season, and fans are curious if the story will jump forward in time. The show seems to be setting up how Maul will eventually control the Crimson Dawn criminal organization.

Solo: A Star Wars Story – 44 Years Old

Darth Maul shocked Star Wars fans with another appearance in the 2018 film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie is set 10 years before the Battle of Yavin (around 13 BBY in the opening scene), making Maul approximately 44 years old at the time.

Star Wars Rebels – 51 & 52 Years Old

Fans first saw Darth Maul again in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. He reappeared in Season 2, in the episode “Twilight of the Apprentice,” which was set 3 years before the Battle of Yavin. He then returned for several episodes in Season 3, all taking place 2 years before the battle. This establishes that Maul was 51 years old when he met Ezra Bridger, and 52 when Obi-Wan Kenobi finally defeated him in the memorable “Twin Suns” episode.
