Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, specifically episode 8, “The Fleece Works Its Magic Too Well.” Craig Silverstein, an executive producer on the show, has discussed how a change made to the season 2 twist ending will affect what happens in season 3. In both Rick Riordan’s book, The Sea of Monsters, and the season 2 finale of Percy Jackson, Thalia Grace (played by Tamara Smart) is restored to human form from her tree form by the power of the Golden Fleece.
This new series offers a different explanation for why Zeus turned his daughter into a tree. Instead of honoring a sacrifice as in the original story, he does it because she refuses to fight for him in the upcoming war against Kronos. In the original tales, the transformation happened to commemorate Thalia’s bravery at Half-Blood Hill.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, showrunner Dan Silverstein explained the decision to give Thalia a personal vendetta against Zeus. He believes this raises the stakes and provides a compelling reason for her to potentially try and overthrow Olympus. Silverstein shared that author Rick Riordan liked this new direction for the story, and hinted that Zeus’s motivations might be more complex than viewers currently understand. You can find Silverstein’s full comments below.
As I mentioned before, Percy is concerned about Thalia because, as a child of prophecy, she could be the one to fulfill the prophecy in a destructive way – potentially destroying Olympus. Giving her understandable motivations, like a strong conflict with Zeus, would make the story more compelling. That’s why this plot twist felt right – it raises the stakes. It’s complicated by the fact that Zeus likely won’t directly cause problems. The core issue is poor parenting, stemming from both being an Olympian and Thalia being a demigod – a dynamic very different from Sally Jackson’s relationship with Percy. Zeus is likely hurt by his own actions, but his pride would never allow him to admit it.
Silverstein also discussed the choice to have Chiron (Glynn Turman) see what Zeus did and keep it a secret. He’d been hiding this information from Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover Underwood until now.
Many of these questions will be addressed in Season 3. Chiron intentionally chose to reveal the truth, and he’s always been someone who strictly follows the rules. However, he’s now reached a point where he’s willing to prioritize the demigods over the gods. The kids will appreciate that decision, as he could have easily delayed telling them.
The TV series Percy Jackson alters a key plot point from the book The Sea of Monsters. Instead of surprising viewers with Thalia’s return at the end of season 2, the show builds anticipation by introducing her in the previous episode and having Percy consider the implications of her reappearance. This change, along with a new revelation about Chiron’s involvement in keeping secrets, creates a different kind of suspense as the show heads into season 3.
Silverstein points out that while Percy, Annabeth, and Grover struggle to fully forgive Chiron for keeping secrets, his confession shows he prioritizes the demigods and Camp Half-Blood over simply following the gods’ orders. Considering Chiron usually sticks to the rules—and was largely absent during season two—this is an important step in his character growth.
Now that season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is confirmed for a 2026 release, fans won’t have to wait as long to find out what happens after the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of the last season. The gap between seasons will be much shorter than the almost two-year wait between the first two seasons. Season 3 will cover the events of the third book in Rick Riordan’s series, The Titan’s Curse.
