Marvel’s latest series, Wonder Man, features a very powerful new hero, and fans are already wondering how he stacks up against Thanos, the MCU’s most formidable villain. The power levels of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe haven’t always been consistent, but figures like Thanos, Thor, Captain Marvel, and the Scarlet Witch have consistently demonstrated incredible strength.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of characters with incredible powers – like Thor surviving a star’s energy and Scarlet Witch changing reality. But Thanos, the villain in two of Marvel’s most popular films, stands out. He’s responsible for the Avengers’ biggest loss, proving he operates on a completely different scale than most heroes and villains.
Okay, so Thanos is gone, thankfully! But get this – rumor has it Robert Downey Jr. is taking on Doctor Doom as the big bad in the next couple of Avengers films. Apparently, this version of Doom is a genius with both science and magic, which sounds seriously intimidating. But honestly? As amazing as the new guy sounds, I still think Thanos was the most powerful villain the MCU has ever thrown at us.
Because Thanos was such a powerful villain, any new character introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe will inevitably be measured against him. Most heroes don’t reach Thanos’s power level, but Simon Williams, the star of the upcoming Wonder Man series, is different. The Disney+ series suggests a promising future for this hero within the MCU.
Wonder Man’s Powers Explained
Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the Marvel series Wonder Man. Throughout the show, the true identity of Simon Williams is gradually revealed. Although Simon aspires to be a famous actor rather than a superhero, he unexpectedly develops powerful and incredibly dangerous abilities. It’s this potentially destructive side of him that brings him to the attention of the Department of Damage Control.
When he was 13, Simon had an accident that unleashed a lot of energy, completely destroying his kitchen. As a result, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has kept his abilities secret. This means Simon doesn’t get to show off his powers much in the movie Wonder Man. He does briefly fight some minor criminals, but there aren’t any large-scale superhero fights.
Despite his struggles, Wonder Man demonstrates incredibly powerful abilities, placing him among the MCU’s strongest characters. Near the end of the season, when Simon finally loses control, he releases a massive burst of energy that completely destroys a soundstage where the show-within-a-show, Wonder Man, was being filmed. The season finale reveals another of Simon’s powers: he’s able to fly, and he escapes from Supermax Prison carrying Trevor Slattery with him.
The Marvel series about Wonder Man doesn’t fully showcase the extent of his abilities, or explain how they work. While the show features energy blasts from his eyes and hands – similar to those seen in the comics – it doesn’t delve into his full power set, which includes flight, near invulnerability, and effectively being immortal.
Thanos’ Powers Explained
Thanos is currently the most powerful villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his incredible strength easily earns him that title. When he became the central threat in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios immediately established him as a uniquely formidable opponent. Even without the Infinity Stones, Thanos was able to physically fight and overpower the Hulk.
Thanos easily defeated the hero, frightening the Hulk so much that Bruce Banner couldn’t bring him out for the remainder of the film. He also killed Loki and Gamora, and repeatedly beat the Avengers in combat. Collecting the Infinity Stones dramatically increased his already immense power.
Thanos was once the strongest being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He used his incredible power to wipe out half of all life, something no other villain has ever accomplished. While wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos even defeated heroes like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange in direct combat.
In the Marvel comics, Thanos has a range of abilities, like firing powerful cosmic energy blasts – a skill we didn’t see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. He’s also immortal and can control minds. Overall, the comic book version of Thanos is actually more powerful than the one portrayed in the MCU.
Thanos Is More Powerful
Comparing Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the character of Simon Williams in Wonder Man, it’s clear that Thanos is currently the more powerful of the two. While Simon Williams demonstrates significant power, he isn’t a traditional hero and has largely kept his abilities hidden throughout his life.
Currently, Wonder Man isn’t powerful enough to defeat Thanos, and he also lacks the skill to use his abilities effectively against him. However, with more training and experience, I believe he could potentially reach Thanos’s strength – without needing the Infinity Gauntlet.
