In a more casual, straightforward manner: Kim Cattrall isn’t playing a main character in “And Just Like That,” but the character of Samantha Jones will live on in memory.

On Thursday, June 26th, during an episode of the Sex and the City spinoff, Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) sent a text message to Samantha for updates about their new neighbor, Duncan Reeves (portrayed by Jonathan Cake), who lived downstairs.

Samantha asks, “What makes him so entertaining? Can you tell me why?” Later, when Carrie mentions that “he lives below me,” Samantha responds playfully, “Oh, I’d rather have him living beneath me.

Carrie found Duncan, a British writer, less appealing following his criticism that she walked through her freshly-acquired Gramercy Park residence in high heels, since the flooring was bare hardwood. He even suggested she switch to ornate slippers for comfort.

In spite of their differences, there’s no denying that Duncan and Carrie share a strong connection – one that could potentially make him a significant player in the love triangle between Carrie, Aidan (played by John Corbett), and themselves as they maneuver through their long-distance relationship.

In the realm of my dedication to sharing insights, I must acknowledge that the bond between me and Samantha has been stretched by miles. When And Just Like That premiered in 2021, I disclosed a rift that occurred after I chose to part ways with Samantha as my book publicist.

Carrie clarified, “She responded with ‘Fine’ and ended our friendship after that.” She acknowledged that her friend might have been angry, but felt they were closer than just a cash machine. She had believed that their group would remain friends for life.

As a die-hard fan, I must say it was quite intriguing when Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, didn’t share the screen with Kim Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, in the initial season of Sex and the City. However, the mystery deepened when a beautiful bouquet of flowers and heartfelt condolences, signed by none other than Samantha herself, arrived at Carrie’s doorstep, following the tragic demise of Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Fast forward to one of Carrie’s episodes on her brief podcast stint, she subtly mentioned the name that always sends a thrill down my spine – Samantha!

Showrunner Michael Patrick King earlier clarified to Us Weekly that the revival never planned to feature Sarah Jessica Parker’s co-star, Kim Cattrall, because she had chosen not to portray the character of Samantha several years ago. (It was in 2017 when Cattrall expressed on Instagram that she no longer felt passionate about playing Samantha.)

Kim is deeply cherished by us all, including myself. I hold a special affection for Kim. Previously, I felt the same way about Samantha, and I understood that we had all put in countless years into nurturing those four friendships. … As for the narrative, we opted not to have Samantha perish because we value her too much. It seems illogical,” King expressed to Us Magazine.

In contrast to the first season, the second installment of AJLT witnessed Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Cattrall, making a strong comeback. She appeared in a 2023 episode, engaging in a phone conversation with Carrie about regretfully missing the “Last Supper” gathering held at her former apartment. Despite Samantha’s attempts to surprise Carrie by visiting from London, her flight was unfortunately delayed.

She expressed her gratitude by saying, “You’re just wonderful, fantastic apartment! Goodbye and take care! Have a splendid evening.

Recently, Cattrall discussed her beloved character from the hit series SATC (and subsequent movies) which she portrayed for six seasons. She shared with The Times of London, “I crafted an exceptional role I cherished deeply, and poured a great deal of affection into it.” If she is forever associated with this character, she said, “That’s perfectly alright with me.

And Just Like That airs on Max Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
