How Selma Blair Is Preparing for Acting Return After Health Battle

Selma Blair is ready to get back at it.

Reese Witherspoon, known for her role in Legally Blonde, recently shared how she’s getting ready to return to filming a movie in February. This will be her first project in seven years, since she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).

She explained to Erin Lim Rhodes of TopMob News that she’s mostly focused on regaining her energy levels. “Filming days are really long,” she said at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment event on December 4th. She’s also taken on a few smaller roles recently to ease back into acting.

She added, “You know, it comes back to me—I’m really ready to work.”

Selma hinted that her new movie will be a return to her beginnings, and she meant that quite literally.

“I’ll have to dye my hair dark again, she revealed. “So I’ll be back to O.G. Selma.”

Selma Blair isn‘t the only one changing her appearance. She recently shared that her 14-year-old son, Arthur Saint Bleick—who she shares with her ex-husband, Jason Bleick—surprised her with a dramatic new hairstyle.

She said her son dyed his hair a bright red while she was away. When she found out, she told him he couldn’t have that color for school. He ended up dyeing it black, which resulted in a purple hue. She then jokingly told him his grades would need to be excellent to compensate.

But despite the unsanctioned makeover, Selma admitted, “He’s in a really cute stage as a teenager.”

After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, Selma has openly shared her experiences with the condition, including the challenges and improvements she’s faced. She’s been in remission since 2022.

She recently shared that she’s still doing well and remains cancer-free after completing chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always talking about prioritizing well-being, and honestly, one of the best things I’ve been focusing on lately is protecting my brain health. It’s incredibly reassuring to know I’m not adding to any existing issues, and I’m really excited about the progress I’m making with neuroplasticity – the brain’s amazing ability to adapt and change! It feels like I’m actively building a better, healthier brain.

Selma expressed gratitude for her current good fortune, but also restated her commitment to supporting people fighting the illness.

She explained that multiple sclerosis affects everyone differently. She believes she has a role to play in speaking out about the condition, and she’s eager to use her voice to challenge the stigma surrounding it.

It’s just… mind-blowing to think about, and he’s still dealing with it now. I’m so worried about him, but also amazed by his resilience. He’s just the best!

In a 2025 interview on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast, Devine described the past year as a “nightmare.” He explained that he’s been experiencing spasms throughout his body and that doctors had previously told him he was facing a life-threatening condition.

He mentioned that his pain is intermittent, explaining that his body has some minor imperfections and isn’t quite working as it should.

He explained that just a few weeks or a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds, but now he couldn’t even do a squat, or even stand on one leg without falling. They were shooting clay pigeons, and… well, things went horribly wrong. I’m just so worried about her!

In an Instagram post, she explained that she was accidentally shot in the face by someone at a party who fired a weapon unsafely. Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often harsh nature, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier,” Schumer was surprised when doctors began commenting on her appearance after press interviews. They suggested she might have Cushing syndrome, potentially caused by high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Schumer to realize she had been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She later learned she had a form of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, which she called “the greatest news imaginable.” Schumer is now relieved to be healthy and attributes her diagnosis to observant doctors online.

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly developed stroke-like symptoms, initially unable to speak or control the right side of her face. Although these symptoms eventually subsided, she went to the hospital for testing. Doctors discovered she had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), often called a ‘mini-stroke’. Further investigation at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to travel to her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey underwent a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the condition affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it had become increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, calling the situation scary and random, but assuring everyone he would be okay and was grateful he was doing better.

He explained that while in Atlanta, he suffered a severe headache and asked for aspirin. Before he could take it, he lost consciousness and doesn’t remember the next 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, they discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then went to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed them all to get through it.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. After that, she remembered only darkness, followed by light, which led her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially starts to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a sudden and severe headache while at the gym. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan quickly revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain. She had suffered an aneurysm, a rupture in an artery. Emergency surgery was performed to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.

Though the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This procedure initially failed, leading to a massive bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia reports she has now made a full recovery and is back to 100%.

While she could have gone home after the stroke, existing health issues – including lupus and kidney problems – required a longer hospital stay. Shailene Woodley struggled with serious health issues throughout her 20s. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she explained that she experienced hearing loss, extreme fatigue, and digestive problems. She saw many doctors but received conflicting diagnoses.

Drawing on her background in herbalism and holistic health, Shailene sought answers from both traditional doctors and alternative healers, hoping to find relief and understand what was happening to her body.

The search for a solution took a full decade. During that time, her physical discomfort led to anxiety around food and eventually to struggles with body image and identity.

Ultimately, Shailene’s health improved, and she is now feeling well. She shared that her issues resolved themselves, and she is happy to be healthy again.
