Everyone I spoke to at Summer Game Fest this year has been comparing Silent Hill Townfall to P.T. – the legendary Silent Hills demo by Kojima Productions that briefly lived on the PS4. It’s been called one of the scariest games ever made, despite it taking place entirely in a small house, and the thing is, even though Townfall is virtually nothing like P.T., it represents everything that that demo was meant to invoke. Perhaps this is the game P.T. would’ve become.
Survival horror video games have been having a moment these past few years, and two franchises are leading the charge: Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The former has released multiple remakes and now a new, extremely high-performing game in Resident Evil Requiem. Meanwhile, Silent Hill itself had a remake and some new releases in Silent Hill f, though the latter was a significant departure from the core tenets of the series. Now the latest installment, Silent Hill Townfall, aims to bring the franchise back a bit while also making bold new changes with first-person, instant revive, etc.

Silent Hill Townfall is a new first-person survival horror game currently in development by Screen Burn and will be published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive. The game is set in Scotland in the mid-1990s, in a town called St. Amelia. While it’s not actually set in the familiar town of Silent Hill, St. Amelia holds its own share of unsettling mysteries.
In this story, people play as the newcomer Simon Ordell, who attempts to uncover his connection to this island and the mysterious woman who appears on his supernaturally-powered handheld CRTV. At SGF, we saw about 20-25 minutes of gameplay, much of it focused on Simon exploring the mysterious woman’s house, which he finds by following the clues laid out on the CRTV. Silent Hill Townfall, like previous Silent Hill games, is quite slow, but this spinoff appears to force players to be more methodical with their actions.
During the gameplay, Simon relies on the CRTV to find clues and, later, to spot enemies even when they’re behind walls. While it’s not foolproof – you need to actively scan for monsters – it’s essential for survival. When combined with peeking around corners, stealth should be much easier in Silent Hill Townfall, assuming you can time your actions well.

The gameplay showed a brief but impactful moment: Simon grabs a stick to fight a monster, but ultimately falls. This wasn’t a failure, though—it was a demonstration of the game’s quick revive system. An IV connected to Simon’s arm instantly gets him back on his feet, though this fast recovery is limited to once per death. It’s a mechanic similar to what you might find in the game Sekiro.
Overall, Silent Hill Townfall has the freakish atmosphere, the right monsters, the intriguing story, the weighty combat, and some new gimmicks like the CRTV. Fans of the original series may enjoy this title more than Silent Hill f, given it’s less of a departure from the core formula, but a lot remains to be seen.
