Warning: This article contains Squid Game spoilers.
Squid Game is over.
In the concluding part of the third season of the South Korean dystopian series on Netflix, which aired on June 27th, main character Gi-hun/Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae) made a selfless move in the last round of Squid Game. Instead of claiming the $45.6 billion South Korean won ($33.4 million USD) prize money for himself, he chose to ensure that Jun-hee/Player 222’s (Jo Yu-ri) newborn baby received it.
“We are not horses,” Gi-hun said before plunging to his death. “We are humans.”
Eventually, the baby found itself under the guardianship of detective Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon). Regrettably, he couldn’t prevent the Squid Game from unfolding quickly enough to capture the game organizers, while Gi-hun’s daughter residing in Los Angeles received his previous winnings as her inheritance.
However, prior to these events, a chain of devastating losses and brutal deaths occurred, some even orchestrated by Gi-hun himself. Following the demise of his friend Jung-bae/Player 390 (Lee Seo-hwan) who was killed by Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) as retribution for their failed uprising against the game creators at the end of season two, Gi-hun was miraculously spared and compelled to keep playing in the lethal contest.
In a brutal round of hide-and-seek set within a labyrinth, where the concealed players were equipped with exit keys, and the searchers carried knives to eliminate opponents, Gi-hun ended up slaying Player 388 (Kang Ha-neul), accusing him of causing Jung-bae’s demise after he showed cowardice during their rebellion.
And while Park Sung-hoon (Player 120, Hyun-ju) managed to find an escape route, she chose to reenter the maze to aid Kang Ae-shim (Player 149, Geum-ja) and Jun-hee. However, as she was preparing to lead the women out of the maze, Im Si-wa (Player 333, Myung-gi), the father of Jun-hee’s child, suddenly struck her from behind, murdering her in cold blood in an attempt to boost the prize money.
During a game of hide-and-seek, Yang Dong-geun (Player 007/Yong-sik), Geum-ja’s son, unfortunately lost his life. In the last moments of the game, when he couldn’t locate any players, he became aggressive towards Jun-hee and her infant. To shield Jun-hee from harm, Geum-ja used her hairpin to wound him severely before he was ultimately gunned down by security personnel.
Unfortunately, neither Geum-ja nor Jun-hee advanced to the final stage of the competition. In the dead of night, overwhelmed by grief following her son’s passing, Geum-ja took her own life. As for Jun-hee, after spraining her ankle while playing hide-and-seek, and facing the requirement to jump rope in the next-to-last round, she chose to jump off a platform instead.
Regarding Park Gyu-young, who played the role of the rebellious Squid Game guard No-eul: She managed to smuggle Lee Jin-wook (Player 246) out of the game and deleted crucial files containing players’ data. Moreover, this character from North Korea discovered that her long-lost daughter was alive and ventured to China in a quest to find her.
Although season three signified the conclusion for Gi-hun and his companions, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted that there were still numerous tales left to unfold within the realm of the Squid Game universe. Intriguingly, during the last moments of season three, a cameo by Cate Blanchett revealed that these perilous games were also taking place in Los Angeles.
He mentioned to Entertainment Weekly during an interview on June 25 that he had a vague notion for a potential spinoff instead of a sequel. This possible spinoff would focus on the three-year interval between Season 1 and Season 2, where Gi-hun searches for recruiters. The storyline might revolve around what the game creators were up to during that period, not their activities within the gaming arena, but rather their lives outside of it.
After all, as Hwang put it, season three is “indeed a finale” and there will be no season four.
He clarified that he isn’t ruling out spinoffs entirely. After all, as they say, never say never!
Notably, Hwang found it incredibly challenging – both physically, mentally, and emotionally – to shoot seasons two and three simultaneously, as he was not only in charge of directing but also writing each episode.
He told EW back in early June that it felt like we were crafting a single season, while simultaneously striving to deliver season three as quickly as possible. Consequently, the workload was significantly greater than usual, and filming took approximately a year, making it quite a challenging physical endeavor.
