How Superman Sets Up World’s Finest With DCU Batman

In its debut weekend, Superman soared to the summit of the box office, leaving many wondering about the fate of the DC Universe series. James Gunn and DC Studios took a daring leap with Superman, positioning the movie in a universe where metahumans (superpowered individuals) have existed for centuries. Superman, being an experienced superhero himself, is not the only powerful one in this world. The film indicates that the DCU has heroes who are backed by corporations (The Justice Gang), some who collaborate with the government (PlanetWatch), while others find themselves unfortunate outliers (Metamorpho). Batman, it seems, prefers solitude and this is hinted early on in the story.

It’s fascinating to spot the subtle hints, especially as a dedicated DC fan myself. Intriguingly, it seems that Superman subtly confirmed the proximity of Metropolis and Gotham City – neighbors, if you will. Add to that James Gunn’s cryptic teasers about the Superman sequel, and it’s becoming increasingly apparent that we might soon witness a World’s Finest adventure, where Superman and Batman join forces in the DCU.

In the thrilling final act of the movie Superman, Lex Luthor abandons all caution in his relentless pursuit to defeat Superman. Utilizing his illicit portal technology, he opens a massive portal from Earth to his secret lair in another dimension, endangering Metropolis and potentially the entire world. This act was designed to create a catastrophe that would lure Superman into action – and it succeeded. Amidst the chaos and fear, one frame shows traffic on the highway attempting to escape the city, with an exit sign clearly pointing towards Gotham City, the residence of The Batman.

Don’t Hold Your Breath For Superman 2

During a chat with EW during the promotional tour for Superman, Gunn was rather evasive when discussing whether or not David Corenswet’s next appearance as Superman would be in a straightforward sequel. As Gunn explained, “[…] It might not strictly be a Superman sequel.

In terms of possibilities for Corenswet’s upcoming Superman film within the DC Universe, there are essentially two main routes: either a crossover event movie, similar to “World’s Finest,” or a bigger team-up film like “Justice League.” A crossover event might seem like the more straightforward route to significant box office success, but the main challenge would be overcoming the memory of the previous DC movie franchise that followed a similar (and now notorious) path.

World’s Finest Wouldn’t Be Another Batman v Superman

The movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” despite being one of the highest-grossing DC films, continues to be highly debated among viewers. Zack Snyder’s portrayal of Superman and Batman, with a focus on their literary depth and mythological significance, deviates significantly from the usual dynamic between these characters when they team up. To clarify, depictions of seasoned Superman and Batman working together in film are fundamentally different from the atmosphere that Snyder created in his movie.

DC Comics has a rich tradition of collaborative stories between Batman and Superman, evolving over time into fully-fledged “World’s Finest” or “Batman/Superman” comic book series. These narratives often depict the duo working together while dealing with friendly friction and deeper philosophical disagreements about crime and heroism. James Gunn’s “Superman” is being likened to the live-action version of “Superman: The Animated Series,” which itself had a popular “World’s Finest” crossover event with “Batman: The Animated Series” in 1997, an event that many fans still consider the gold standard for successful crossovers.

In this particular scenario, the DCU “World’s Finest” movie would serve multiple purposes for Gunn and the team. Primarily, it would bring Corenswet’s Superman back into the limelight, allowing us to appreciate his charming (and somewhat goofy) portrayal of the Man of Steel, especially when paired with Batman, whose partnership has always been the most intriguing aspect of their duo.

Secondly, this team-up would serve as a shrewd backdoor introduction to the DCU Batman and the actor playing him. Bypassing the traditional origin story and world-building aspects, fans could quickly become acquainted with the nuances of this Batman – understanding his similarities and differences from previous versions – through shared conversations and battles with Superman. Additionally, we would witness Bruce Wayne’s interactions with Clark Kent and Lois Lane, as well as Clark’s connections with Alfred, Robin, or other members of the Bat-Family that we are introduced to along the way.

The World’s Finest series could serve as an opportunity for the DC Universe (DCU) to broaden its horizons, offering glimpses into various aspects of Metropolis, Gotham City, and other fantastical elements from Batman and Superman’s shared lore, such as the Justice League headquarters, Cadmus, the Batcave, etc. Since Superman possesses immense power capable of overcoming most threats, it is reasonable to expect that the World’s Finest series would heavily rely on Batman’s detective skills, a facet of his character that many fans are eager to see in movies. Additionally, this series could potentially address the lingering disenchantment among DC fans due to Batman v Superman not delivering the team-up that many had anticipated for so long.

The production of a “World’s Finest” film could serve as an appealing substitute for another Superman movie, providing DC Studios with a smooth transition to introduce their on-screen Batman character without conflicting with Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II” sequel. A collaboration between Batman and Superman would offer a unique twist (yet equally captivating) to regular cinema-goers, allowing the DCU enough time to release its standalone Batman film, “The Brave and the Bold,” after Reeves’ sequel.

While nothing has been officially decided, it appears that “World’s Finest” might be the likely direction for the DC Universe moving forward, given that the indicators in Superman are quite clearly pointing us towards this destination.

Superman is now in theaters.
