With the 25th anniversary of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Universal has released a new 4K version of the holiday favorite. It’s available as a regular release and a special limited-edition SteelBook. This isn’t just a re-release, though – the 4K version features improved picture quality and enhanced bonus features.

In 2025, Universal is re-releasing several classic films, including a special anniversary edition of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Similar to the releases of Jaws and Back to the Future, this edition features a brand-new documentary exploring the film’s production and lasting impact. The documentary includes interviews with director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer, makeup artist Rick Baker, and Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy-Lou Who. While it’s the only new addition to the disc, it’s a strong and worthwhile feature for a film that’s 25 years old, particularly from a major studio.
For many collectors who prefer physical copies, the biggest draw will be that this version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is better than the one they might already have. It’s been remastered again and now includes Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound, features that were absent from earlier 4K releases.
The most recent major release of How the Grinch Stole Christmas was five years ago, celebrating the film’s 20th anniversary, and it included a standard SteelBook edition. I already own that version, and it didn’t feature Dolby Vision. While the improvements over that release aren’t as significant as the jump from Blu-ray to the first 4K version, it’s still a noticeable upgrade, especially if you have a Dolby Vision-compatible TV. That alone makes this a worthwhile purchase for devoted fans of the movie.
My only slight reservation about this new release is that the SteelBook design isn’t quite as strong as the one from the 20th anniversary edition – though that’s just my opinion. While this new cover is energetic and reflects the film well, I particularly liked how the previous SteelBook simply showed the Grinch’s hand holding an ornament, echoing the original movie poster. It’s not a major issue, and many fans will probably see it differently.
This new 4K version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a worthwhile upgrade – it’s not just a repackage. The improved quality makes it a great addition for any fan’s collection.
