The newest Mummy movie, directed by Lee Cronin, isn’t just a revival of that classic franchise—it also has a hidden connection to another famous horror series, Evil Dead. Cronin gained recognition with his 2019 independent film, The Hole in the Ground, and used that success to direct 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. This Evil Dead installment is a particularly violent and intense movie that moves the story from the traditional isolated cabin to a high-rise apartment building.
After successfully reimagining the Evil Dead story, Lee Cronin turned his attention to another classic horror series: The Mummy. His The Mummy is a reboot of Universal’s long-running franchise – which started in 1932 with Lon Chaney – and leans heavily into horror, earning an R rating. While quite different from previous Mummy films, Cronin cleverly connected it to his Evil Dead universe. He revealed in an interview with Collider that a professor character in The Mummy shares a family name with characters from Evil Dead Rise.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Secretly Takes Place In The Evil Dead Franchise Universe

Unlike a fresh start, Evil Dead Rise continued the existing Evil Dead storyline. This means Lee Cronin’s The Mummy shares the same universe as both his previous work and all the Evil Dead films. This connection makes sense, as The Mummy’s intense and violent style feels more akin to an Evil Dead movie than traditional Mummy films. The story begins with a young girl’s abduction by suspicious characters, then jumps forward in time to when she’s found alive and mysteriously sealed inside a sarcophagus.
The mystery of how the young girl ended up inside a sarcophagus isn’t solved until she’s back with her parents and starts acting strangely. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is less of a classic mummy adventure and more of a possession story – many critics have compared it to The Exorcist or the film Bring Her Back. The fact that the movie is connected to the Evil Dead universe explains its dark humor and graphic violence.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Easter Egg Continues A Decades-Long Horror Tradition

Lee Cronin’s new The Mummy cleverly continues a fun, decades-long tradition started by horror directors Sam Raimi and Wes Craven. Back in 1980, Raimi included a poster for Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes in his film The Evil Dead. Craven returned the favor by featuring a poster for The Evil Dead in his 1984 movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Raimi then snuck Freddy Krueger’s glove into a scene in Evil Dead II (1987). By establishing that his The Mummy exists in the same universe as the Evil Dead films, Cronin keeps this playful cross-referencing alive for fans in 2026.
