Great White Sharks can be challenging to defeat in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), particularly if you’re trying to gain experience by repeatedly fighting them.
These sharks are incredibly durable, and they’re the only place to find the rare Broken Dragon Hook. You’ll need this item to fully upgrade your salvaging hook, but be warned – it takes a lot of shark hunting to obtain!
In this guide, we’ll tell you how to easily combat and farm Great White Sharks.
How to Combat and Farm Great White Sharks | OSRS
Preparation and Basics

Let’s start with the fundamentals of naval combat. A key strategy is to avoid using costly ranged ammunition during sea battles, and this applies even when fighting creatures like Great White Sharks.
Ranged weapons deal significantly reduced damage – only about 25% of their normal effectiveness – when used while sailing. Because of this, it’s not worth using your best or most expensive ammunition.
This also applies to your cannons. Using better cannonballs significantly increases the maximum damage you can inflict, as we explained in our guide on maximizing cannon damage.
If you’re thinking about farming Great White Sharks, it’s best to use Bronze Cannonballs. They’re significantly cheaper than other types, letting you buy a large quantity without spending much gold, and they still deal enough damage to get the job done!

Don’t forget to upgrade your ship’s Keel and Hull! These customizations will significantly increase its Hit Points and Armour, helping you withstand attacks from Great White Sharks.
Using these helps make up for the reduced damage of less expensive cannonballs. Since battles will take a little longer, you’ll need to be more durable!
It’s also a great idea to bring plenty of Repair Kits. You’ll use them to fix your ship and recover health.

Finally, it’s best to assign two crew members skilled in Privateering to operate your cannons. This frees you up to use ranged weapons, adding a bit of extra damage to your attacks.
Recommended Farming Spot and Method

Okay, so now that you’ve got the basics down, let me tell you my favorite spot for taking down Great White Sharks – it’s super efficient for farming, too! It’s southwest of Lunar Isle, and I’ve marked it on the map above so you can find it easily.
If you’re using something like the RuneLite client, which lets you place markers on your screen, here are the markers for this Great White Shark farming location. They’ll help you position your boat correctly.

You can add Tile Markers to your minimap by copying them and then right-clicking to choose “Import Ground Markers.”

If you’re using the Tile Markers, make sure your boat is lined up with them. It’s especially important to center the front of your boat – the bowsprit – with the markers.
Positioning yourself correctly will let both of your cannons fire straight ahead, hitting the sharks directly without needing any special maneuvers! This significantly boosts your damage and makes completing the farm much easier.
Okay, so I figured out something cool! If you get your boat positioned just like in that picture, it actually becomes a safe spot for me! The sharks can still beat up my boat, but they can’t actually damage me directly, which is awesome!
Okay, so I figured out a positioning trick that works against Great White Sharks everywhere, not just where I usually farm them. Basically, you need to line up the very front of your ship – your bowsprit – with the middle of the tile the shark is on. It seems to really throw them off and makes fighting them way easier!
With a little preparation, you can consistently and safely hunt Great White Sharks for extended periods. Just stock up on cannonballs and Repair Kits, and you’ll be ready to go!
That wraps up our guide to fighting and farming Great White Sharks in Old School RuneScape. We hope it helps you get the incredibly rare Broken Dragon Hook!
