How To Easily Win At Wrestling In Where Winds Meet

Where Winds Meet offers a ton of different activities. You can follow the engaging main storyline, hang out with friends online as a doctor, or just relax with hobbies like fishing and card games. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can battle in the arena, try your hand at pickpocketing, or even strike up conversations and debates with the locals.

There are many ways to improve yourself in the game, and wrestling is one of them. It’s a bit more complex than some of the other activities, so it might take a little while to learn, but it offers good benefits.

What Is Wrestling?

You won’t find the wrestling minigame in Qinghe. You need to progress the main story and reach Kaifeng to unlock it, as that’s currently the only location where wrestling is available.

The earliest known form of wrestling originated in Kaifeng City, and it’s a great place to practice – you can easily find sparring partners to learn or brush up on your skills.

Winning a wrestling match, like other minigames, gives you several rewards, but most of them are only awarded the first time you win. These rewards include Jade Coins, Five Dynasty Coins (which you can use to buy things), Commerce Coins, Experience, Exploration Points, and Constitution attribute points.

Mechanics Of Wrestling

Most of the minigames in Where Winds Meet are easy to pick up but require practice to perfect – think learning an instrument or playing Pitch Pot. Wrestling is different, though. It’s all about predicting your opponent’s moves, and honestly, it feels a lot like a more involved version of Rock-Paper-Scissors.

In wrestling, the main objective is to completely break your opponent’s will to fight. You do this by using various moves, called Techniques, against them. Both players secretly choose their actions beforehand, so neither one knows what the other is planning until it happens.

Let’s take a closer look at each mechanic below.

Building Momentum

This explains the basic way moves work in wrestling. If you choose to Build Momentum, you spend your turn to earn one Momentum point. Momentum is then used only for powerful, damaging attacks.

If you select Build Momentum, you become susceptible to all attacks. This means any attack from your opponent will inflict its full damage, regardless of any defenses you might have. However, even when attacked, you’ll still accumulate Momentum.

You only lose Momentum when you use it – your opponent can’t take it away from you.

Blocking Attacks

It’s natural to want to block when someone attacks, but predicting exactly when they’ll strike is impossible, so you have to anticipate and react based on your best guess.

Okay, so NPCs are really aggressive – they’ll attack the second they get even a tiny bit of Momentum. Because of that, I’ve learned it’s almost always smart to block right after they start building it up. If I pull off a block, it completely cancels the damage and, even better, makes them lose all the Momentum they were building! It’s a great way to shut down their attacks and keep myself safe.

There are also two types of block:

  • Block – This is used to defend against all forms of attack except for Vajra Toss.
  • Vajra Block – This can only block against Vajra Toss, and all other attacks will bypass it.

Enemies usually use their most powerful attacks whenever they can. So, if an enemy has three Momentum points, it’s best to use Vajra Block to defend against their Vajra Toss. Otherwise, just use the standard Block.

Performing Techniques

To lower your opponent’s Fighting Spirit, you have to attack them with Techniques. They won’t lose Fighting Spirit unless they’re hit, so simply avoiding attacks won’t win you the match. You only have 20 rounds to finish, so you need to actively engage.

You can perform four different Techniques. One doesn’t need any build-up, while the other three require increasing amounts of momentum. Here’s a list of them all:

  • Thrust Attack – Deals light damage but requires no Momentum.
  • Stake Technique – Deals decent damage, require one Momentum point.
  • Pushing Attack – Deals significant damage, requires two Momentum points.
  • Vajra Toss – Will immediately deplete the all Fighting Spirit when it lands, requires three Momentum points.

The main goal should be to earn three Momentum points and use the Vajra Toss, which immediately wins the match. However, opponents will quickly try to stop you once they see you’ve gained three Momentum points, so it becomes a battle of strategy and anticipation – a true wrestling mind game.

Action Priority

Because you and your opponent make your moves simultaneously, you can’t predict what the other will do. This means there needs to be a system to decide who wins if both players choose the same action in a round.

Typically, stronger attacks will happen before weaker ones. For example, if you push an opponent while they’re trying to use a staking technique, your push will override their attack, and only you will deal damage.

If you select Build Momentum, your attacks will always go first, even though you’ll continue to build up Momentum. Blocking against someone using Build Momentum has no effect.

Blocking always happens before any attack, unless the attack is Vajra Toss. However, Vajra Block works the other way around – it stops Vajra Toss, but everything else will happen before it.

How To Win At Wrestling

You can usually win at Wrestling, even against tough opponents, because the computer-controlled characters (NPCs) behave in predictable ways.

Non-player characters (NPCs) tend to respond directly to your last action. For example, if you try to gain an advantage, they’ll often prepare to defend against your next move. Because of this, it can be effective to try gaining that advantage again.

If your opponent starts building momentum, they’ll almost certainly attack right away, so it’s usually best to block. After that, they’ll likely try to build momentum again or use a thrust attack, which gives you a chance to use a powerful technique that requires momentum to counter them.

Once you’ve earned three Momentum points, enemies will likely expect you to use Vajra Toss and will try to block it with Vajra Block. To surprise them, it’s often best to use Pushing Attack instead when you have full Momentum.

However, you can also play wrestling online against other people. When playing against human opponents, the strategies mentioned earlier aren’t as reliable because people are much less predictable than the computer. You’ll need to use psychology and think more carefully about your moves to succeed.
