How to Fish in Hytale

If you want to gather fish in Hytale, you’ll obviously need to learn how to fish for them!

Fishing in Hytale is different than most games. Instead of using a fishing rod and waiting for fish to bite, you set traps and wait for them to swim into them.

This guide covers everything you need to know about fishing in the Early Access version of Hytale.

How Fishing in Hytale Works

Okay, so if you want to start fishing, the very first thing you need to do is build a Farmer’s Workbench using your regular Workbench. After that, you’ll need to upgrade that Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 2 before you can really get going!

Completing this step will give you the recipe to make a Fishing Trap. You’ll need these materials to craft it:

  • Any Wood x10 – Obtained from chopping down any trees.
  • Essence of Life x50 – Obtained from harvesting crops, including ones found in the wild.
  • Plant Fiber x20 – Mostly obtained from cutting tall grass.
  • Iron Ingot x1 – Obtained by smelting Iron Ore at a Furnace. Check out our guide on all ore locations for help getting Iron Ore.

You can also make different kinds of Fish Bait using the Farmer’s Workbench. While not necessary, these baits can help you fish more quickly and easily!

After crafting a Fishing Trap, locate a sizable natural body of water like a river or the sea. Then, simply use the trap as you would any other tool to set it on the water.

If you have bait, you can use it now. Just select it from your quick access bar and click on an empty Fishing Trap to apply it.

Once you’ve set your Fishing Traps, all you need to do is wait! Feel free to work on other things in the meantime, and then come back to check them. Simply click on the traps to collect any fish you’ve caught – it’s that easy!

Just a heads-up: once I snag a fish with a trap, the trap stays put! That’s awesome because I don’t have to keep rebuilding them over and over again. Definitely a time-saver when I’m trying to level up my fishing!
