To build the Onix’s Smooth Tall Grass Habitat, you’ll need a specific item, but the game doesn’t give you clear instructions on where to find it or how to assemble the habitat itself.

How to get Smooth Rock in Pokémon Pokopia

The Smooth Rock is located in the cave where you first battle Onix as part of the ‘Yawn Up A Storm’ quest.

Okay, so I went back to that cave near the Withered Wasteland – you know, the one where Onix was stuck? As you’re walking through, before you make that right turn to get to where Onix was, check the left side. There’s a little shelf-like block and that’s where I found the Smooth Rock! It was just sitting there as an item pickup, super easy to miss if you’re not looking.

You won’t have to purchase, create, or earn this item through any special process. Just return to the cave and pick it up where you found it.

How to make a Smooth Tall Grass Habitat for Onix in Pokémon Pokopia

After you get the Smooth Rock, you can create the Smooth Tall Grass Habitat for Onix by combining it with four Dry Tall Grass.

Dry Tall Grass isn’t crafted or bought – it’s found naturally. It appears when you use the Leafage move on a patch of ground that hasn’t been watered. This can be tricky, so remember to apply Leafage to dry areas directly, rather than trying to make it at a workbench.

Next, arrange the four Dry Tall Grass pieces to form a square, two by two. Then, place the Smooth Rock right beside this square. If you’ve done it correctly, the game will let you know you’ve successfully restored the Smooth Tall Grass Habitat.

At that point, you can return to Onix and speak to it to finish the request.
