The popular musical Jesus Christ Superstar, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is coming back to London next summer, and Eurovision sensation Sam Ryder will be starring in the lead role.
The singer, who finished second representing the UK in the 2022 song contest, will star as Jesus in a new production at the London Palladium.
This new version is based on the acclaimed 2017 production from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. It features a large cast of over 30 performers and was directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Olivier Award-winning Drew McOnie.
Ryder expressed his excitement about joining the iconic London Palladium in the West End, calling it one of the biggest musical theatre institutions globally. He feels honored to continue the legacy of legendary rock vocalists like Ian Gillan and John Farnham, and is eager to fully embrace the role in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ when it returns in 2026.
Producer Michael Harrison expressed his excitement about reuniting the talented creative team from the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production for a new version of Jesus Christ Superstar at The London Palladium. He believes Sam is perfectly cast in the lead role and promised more details about the show will be revealed soon.
The first London production of Jesus Christ Superstar was a huge success, running for over eight years and becoming the longest-running West End musical of its time. Created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the show offers a fresh take on the story of the Last Supper and the crucifixion, told from the point of view of Judas. It features a famous score with hit songs like “Heaven on Their Minds,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and the title track, “Superstar.”
