Even though the story and surprises in ‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ are engaging enough on their own, the Netflix series is also packed with memorable music moments.
One of the highlights of the new comedy-drama is its fantastic soundtrack, featuring nostalgic hits from bands like B*Witched, Atomic Kitten, S Club 7, and Tatu, instantly taking viewers back in time. The show also includes a lot of music from Girls Aloud, which the creator, Lisa McGee, was particularly excited about. Because of the show’s setting, she wasn’t able to use their music in her previous series, Derry Girls, but was thrilled to include them this time – especially given the band’s connection to Derry (Nadine Coyle is a member).
McGee explained that some of the music from Belfast’s ‘How to Get to Heaven’ was intentionally included in the show. He used ‘Hot In Herre’ as an example, saying it was crucial for a particular scene to have the right impact – it just worked.
We use three main types of music in the show. First, there’s the original, atmospheric score created by Sion Trefor – it’s designed to be eerie and set a mood. Second, we have songs written by Gary Lightbody and Iain Archer that are really emotional and play during key character moments. Finally, there are the fun, retro tracks – basically, songs that the executives, the director Mike Lennox, and I all remember fondly and think will resonate with the audience.
The series features original music by Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol and award-winning Iain Archer, alongside a great selection of well-known songs. Want to know which tracks appear and in which episodes? Keep reading for a complete guide to the soundtrack of How to Get to Heaven from Belfast.
