How to Get to Varlamore and Fossil Island in OSRS

Varlamore and Fossil Island are two important areas players can access fairly soon after starting Old School RuneScape (OSRS).

As you play, you’ll unlock special areas just for members. However, it’s not always clear which quests you need to complete to access them!

In this guide, we’ll help you reach both of these areas as easily and quickly as possible.

How to Get to Varlamore and Fossil Island | OSRS

Varlamore

You’ll need to finish the “Children of the Sun” quest before you can enter Varlamore. Luckily, it’s a straightforward quest! You can begin it by speaking with Noah or Alina, who are both located in Varrock Square.

To begin a cutscene, just ask them, “When will the delegation arrive?” After the cutscene finishes, you’ll automatically start following a guard who’s carrying a mysterious bag.

Once you finish the tailing mission, report your findings to Sergeant Tobyn in Varrock Square. Be careful – there are bandits disguised as guards in the area!

Next, Tobyn will ask you to locate and identify the four bandits who are disguised among the people in Varrock Square. You can spot them by looking for specific clues.

  • A guard sleeping outside of Aris’ tent.
  • A female guard without a helmet wandering around Benny’s news stand.
  • An unarmed guard leaning against one of the walls of Lowe’s Archery Emporium.
  • A mace-wielding guard to the east of Varrock Square.

After you’ve identified everything, go back to Sergeant Tobyn and see what happens next. Finally, speak with Sergeant Tobyn again while he’s in the cell, after watching the interrogation. You’ll then complete the quest!

Now, simply head south from the eastern gate of Varrock. You’ll find Regulus Cento, who takes care of quetzals, waiting there. Just speak to him, and he’ll offer you a ride to Varlamore on his quetzal – it’s that easy!

Fossil Island

Just like with Varlamore, you’ll need to finish a quest before you can reach Fossil Island. For this, you’ll need to complete the Bone Voyage quest. Begin by speaking to Curator Haig Halen at the Varrock Museum and asking him about any interesting news.

This task is straightforward, but it might take some time because you’ll need to travel and chat with many characters. Here’s a simple guide to help you finish it.

First, talk to the Barge Foreman at the Canal Barge north of the Digsite in Varrock.

Head northwest from the barge until you reach the Sawmill. Once there, speak with the Sawmill Operator and let them know you’re with the museum’s archeological team – you need to get a copy of the Sawmill Proposal.

Next, head to the Woodcutting Guild in Hosidius. If you can’t get inside, speak to Berry near the east gate. Otherwise, go inside and show the Sawmill Proposal to the Sawmill Operator.

Return to the Varrock Sawmill Operator and deliver the Sawmill Agreement to him.

Okay, so I need to head back to the Barge Foreman. This time, he wants me to actually go inside the barge. I’m ready when he is, so I’ll go in whenever I’m good to go!

On the barge, talk to the Lead Navigator and confirm you’re here to help with the voyage.

After that, head to the Rusty Anchor Inn in Port Sarim. Speak with Jack Seagull and inquire about any cursed voyages he might have taken. He’ll present you with a couple of choices, but you’re not sure what to do yet.

Go back to the barge at the Digsite in Varrock. Once inside, speak to the Lead Navigator and tell them you’ll pursue both options Jack Seagull told you about.

Uncursing the Cursed Voyage

Head north from the Digsite to the Limestone Mine. Find the Odd Old Man and tell him about the cursed ship journey to receive the Bone Charm.

Next, head southwest from Varrock Square and speak with the Apothecary. When you talk to them, choose the option to ‘talk about something else,’ and then select ‘talk about Bone Voyage’.

If you give the Apothecary 1 Marrentill Potion and 2 Bottles of Vodka, he will reward you with a Potion of Sealegs.

Go back to the barge at the Digsite and give the charm and potion to the Lead Operator. When you’re prepared to leave for Fossil Island, choose the “I’m ready” option.

Unfortunately, the potion caused some of the crew to fall unconscious. Now, you need to take control of the ship and guide it to Fossil Island. To do this, use the controls in the bottom right corner to keep the yellow arrow pointing straight up, towards the north.

If you beat this minigame, you’ll safely arrive at Fossil Island, finish the Bone Voyage quest, and gain permanent access to the island!

You can now revisit Fossil Island! Just head to the Digsite in Barrock and use the barge to travel there. Best of all, you won’t need to complete any quests or minigames to access it.

So, that covers everything you need to reach Varlamore and Fossil Island in Old School RuneScape as of 2025.
