Borderlands 4 features a vast world with lots of optional challenges, and the Auger Mines are some of the best. These are special areas, similar to dungeons, where you’ll fight enemies, test your platforming skills, and battle a boss for unique rewards. One of the first you’ll find is called The Claim, located in the Idolator’s Noose region. This guide will show you how to unlock and complete The Claim, including how to defeat its boss, The Backhive.
How to Unlock The Claim Auger Mine
You’ll need to advance the main story before you can start The Claim. Here’s what you need to do:
- Complete the main mission #6: Shadow of the Mountain.
- Once it’s cleared, Auger Mines across Borderlands 4, including The Claim, will unlock.
If you’re eager to start exploring the mines, make sure you finish the main story questline, specifically “Shadow of the Mountain,” first.
The Claim – Location & Basics
- Region: Idolator’s Noose
- Enemies: Kratches
- Boss: The Backhive
- XP Reward: 1,023 XP
- Completion Reward: 40 SDU
- Machines Inside: Ammo, Meds, and Encore (right before the boss room)
Auger Mines aren’t required, but they’re definitely worth exploring. You’ll gain experience and rewards, and you have a chance to get powerful, rare items from the bosses. While it’s not the most efficient place to farm for items, The Claim is enjoyable because of its challenging jumps and platforming sections.
How to Reach The Claim
To get to The Claim:
- Head to the Idolator’s Noose region.
- Go north from The Stubs until you reach a high drop leading into the mine.
- Jump down, and you’re in.
Getting around will be the biggest hurdle – you’ll need to use tools like grappling hooks, climb walls, and do a lot of double jumps to navigate each area.
Navigating The Claim Mine
Here’s a room-by-room breakdown to help you through:
- The Acid Pool Room → Cross the large acid-filled area and head northeast to continue.
- Steel Beam Room → Cross beams and reach the water pool. Grapple from the middle structure (with the light fixture) to get to the southern ledge.
- Climbable Wall Section → Use the climbable wall to reach a higher ledge, then crouch into a tunnel that leads to a fan room.
- Fan Room → Head west to find the path forward.
- Pre-Boss Area → Stock up at the Ammo, Meds, and Encore machines.
- Boss Fight → Slide down the slope to trigger the fight with The Backhive.
The Backhive Boss Fight
The Backhive is the last obstacle in The Claim. While it’s not the hardest boss you’ll face in the mines, here are a few helpful hints to get you through it.
- Clear mobs first so you don’t get overwhelmed.
- Watch for acid pool hazards — they can chip your shields quickly.
- Take advantage of the Encore machine nearby if you want to re-farm The Backhive for XP and potential legendaries.
Loot is randomized, but expect gear upgrades, SDUs, and the occasional legendary.
The Claim Tips & Tricks
- You can ignore mobs in the early areas and just run past them to save time.
- The Encore machine lets you respawn The Backhive for repeat farming.
- Once complete, you can either backtrack, fast travel out, or use the orb in the boss room to teleport back to the machines.
- While not a prime farming spot, it’s a fun run for traversal practice and early-game loot.
Wrap-Up
Okay, so I just finished up The Claim Auger Mine in Borderlands 4, and here’s the deal. You unlock it after you beat The Backhive. Once you’ve done that, you can go back as many times as you want to level up and grab some loot. Honestly, though, the fun part isn’t really about getting tons of stuff quickly. It’s more about the tricky way you have to get around in there and the awesome boss fight at the end. That’s what I kept coming back for!
