How to update Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Wondering how to update Animal Crossing: New Horizons yourself? Here’s how to do it on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
- Make sure your Nintendo Switch is connected to the internet (press the ‘System Settings’ cog on the console home page, head to ‘Internet Settings’ and connect the console to your Wifi)
- Ensure that your copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is closed (hover over the game on your console home page and press the X button to close the software)
- Try to open the game, and you should be prompted to download the Animal Crossing update!
If, for some reason, the update doesn’t seem to be coming, try this back-up plan:
- Hover over the game on your console home page and press the + button
- In the menu that appears, head to ‘Software Update’ and select the option titled ‘Via the Internet’
- The console will then search for updates – if you have one to download, it will prompt you to do so.

What version is the new Animal Crossing update?
With the latest update, Animal Crossing is now version 3.0, and it includes a ton of new features and content.
The island now features a new hotel, transforming it into a popular vacation destination thanks to Kapp’n and his family.
You can create unique hotel rooms with different themes to please your guests. Plus, you’ll get to interact with them while they’re enjoying their stay on the island.
You’ll now also be able to craft specialty goods using DIY, exchanging them for hotel tickets.
As a huge fan of this hotel, I was so excited to learn that the tickets we get with our stay can be used in the gift shop! They have some really cool, exclusive souvenirs and tons of things themed around the hotel itself – perfect for remembering my trip!
Slumber Island is a brand-new area to explore! If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can team up with friends and decorate the island together.

Of course, if you want the Switch 2 upgrade, you’ll first have to actually have a Switch 2.
Once you’ve taken care of that, simply visit the Nintendo eShop. You can then buy Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for £54.99.
Alternatively, if you already own the base game, the upgrade will only cost you £4.19!
After this, download any updates that come you’re way, and you’re good to go!
