Get ready to travel through the Stargate again! Amazon is bringing the popular sci-fi series back with a new show planned for Prime Video. The team behind the original 1994 movie – Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin – are joining forces with veterans from the Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe TV shows. Martin Gero, who worked on those shows, will be leading the creative side of this new series. Importantly, this won’t be a complete restart; it’s designed to continue the existing story, making it easy for new fans to jump in while still satisfying those who have followed the series for years. It’s a big moment for Stargate, which hasn’t had a new show since Stargate Universe ended in 2011, and details about the plot are still being kept secret.
As a longtime fan, I get it – the Stargate universe is huge. With three TV shows, a couple of movies released straight to video, and even a web series that came before it all, figuring out where to start can be really daunting. That’s why I put together this guide – it’s a simple, chronological way to experience the entire story. Think of it as your roadmap to exploring everything before the new series drops. Just a heads-up, we’re skipping the Stargate Infinity cartoon, as the people who created the whole thing don’t consider it part of the official story.
1) Stargate

The story begins with the 1994 film Stargate, the movie that launched the entire franchise. Directed by Roland Emmerich, it introduces the idea of an ancient alien device – the Stargate – which creates a wormhole allowing for instant travel across the universe. The film centers on Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), a gifted but unconventional Egyptologist, as they lead the first team through the Stargate to the desert planet of Abydos. There, they find a human civilization enslaved by a powerful alien who pretends to be the Egyptian sun god Ra. The movie lays the groundwork for everything that follows, establishing key elements like the Goa’uld, how the Stargate works, and humanity’s initial exploration of a vast universe. It’s a quintessential 90s sci-fi action film and the perfect place to start if you’re planning to watch the whole series.
2) Stargate Origins

Released in 2018 as a web series, Stargate Origins tells the story of how the Stargate first came to Earth. Set in the late 1930s, the show follows Catherine Langford, the young daughter of the archaeologist who discovered the Stargate in Egypt. When Nazis capture her father and try to weaponize the gate, Catherine undertakes a risky mission through the Stargate to save him. The series reveals the origins of the Stargate program, long before Stargate Command was established. Though made later than other Stargate shows, Origins takes place before the original movie and TV series, showing the initial discovery of the technology and the conflicts it caused. However, it’s best to watch this prequel after seeing the original movie, as it assumes you already know the basic story.
3) Stargate SG-1 (Seasons 1-7)

Starting a year after the original Stargate movie, Stargate SG-1 introduces a new direction and a much larger universe. The show features Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel Jack O’Neill and Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson, alongside the new team members Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Teal’c (Christopher Judge). For the first seven seasons, the series focuses on the fight against the Goa’uld, a dangerous alien race that has taken over many planets. This period establishes the core story, introducing important allies like the Asgard and Tok’ra, and powerful enemies such as the Replicators.
4) Stargate SG-1 (Seasons 8-10) and Stargate: Atlantis (Seasons 1-3)

The storylines of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis became linked when Atlantis was introduced in the eighth season of SG-1. The shows were created to be watched together, with the SG-1 season seven finale, “Lost City,” directly setting up the events of Atlantis. In that finale, the team finds the location of the ancient city in the Pegasus galaxy, leading to a new expedition led by Dr. Elizabeth Weir. For the next three years, both shows aired, mostly telling independent stories, but with occasional crossover episodes and shared characters that connected them.
As a longtime fan, I’ve found the absolute best way to revisit this exciting period of the Stargate universe. Forget watching either SG-1 or Atlantis straight through – you need to alternate episodes. Start with the first episode of SG-1 Season 8, then jump right into the first episode of Atlantis Season 1, and keep going back and forth. Trust me, it makes a huge difference! It perfectly recreates how things originally aired and ensures all the clever story connections and character appearances hit just right. For example, Daniel Jackson’s trip to Atlantis feels much more natural, and the importance of the Prometheus heading to the Pegasus galaxy really lands. To get the full experience, follow this pattern for SG-1 seasons 8-10 and Atlantis seasons 1-3. It’s the only way to truly appreciate how these shows fit together.
5) Stargate: The Ark of Truth

Right after the tenth season of Stargate SG-1 ended, the story continued in the movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth. This film provides a final resolution to the show’s main storyline, centering on SG-1’s last battle against the Ori—powerful, god-like beings who were waging war across the galaxy. In the movie, the team travels to the Ori’s home galaxy seeking the Ark of Truth, an Ancient weapon that could finally end the conflict. Stargate: The Ark of Truth neatly wraps up the character arcs developed in the show’s final two seasons and resolves the major conflict that defined the later part of SG-1.
6) Stargate: Atlantis (Season 4)

Now that the Ori storyline is finished, the fourth season of Stargate: Atlantis focuses entirely on the Pegasus galaxy. This season works well as one continuous story, dealing with the aftermath of the battle against the Asurans – a powerful, self-aware enemy. A key change this season is the arrival of Colonel Samantha Carter, who takes command of the Atlantis base. This directly connects the end of SG-1 to the ongoing adventures in Pegasus, and brings a well-known and popular character into a new leadership position.
7) Stargate: Continuum

Following the fourth season of Stargate: Atlantis, the story briefly shifts to a final adventure with the original SG-1 team in the movie Stargate: Continuum. The team faces off against Ba’al (Cliff Simon), the last of the Goa’uld, who manages to travel back in time and change history, creating a reality where the Stargate program never existed. Now, the remaining members of SG-1 must find a way to fix the timeline and prevent their world from being taken over. Though separate from the main Atlantis storyline, the movie is perfectly placed as a fitting and exciting conclusion to the original cast’s long fight against the Goa’uld, offering a satisfying epilogue to their journey.
8) Stargate: Atlantis (Season 5)

The fifth and final season of Stargate: Atlantis concludes the expedition’s adventures in the Pegasus galaxy with a thrilling finale. Picking up after the events of season four, the team continues to battle the Wraith, a centuries-old, vampire-like alien race. While searching for a way to finally defeat the Wraith, they discover new information about the Ancients and confront a dangerous new group of Wraith led by the mysterious Michael (Connor Trinneer). This season wraps up the show’s five-year story arc, resolving the main conflict and bringing the Atlantis expedition’s journey to a close – though the ending feels a bit sudden – marking the end of this part of the Stargate story.
9) Stargate Universe (Seasons 1-2)

The last major installment in the Stargate series is Stargate Universe, which explores a more serious and dramatic side of the story. The show begins with a group of people – soldiers, scientists, and civilians – escaping through the Stargate as their secret base is attacked. They find themselves on the Destiny, an incredibly old spaceship already traveling a set course far, far away from Earth. With no way back home, this unprepared crew has to learn to live and survive on the ship as it takes them further into the vast unknown. Although the series only lasted two seasons, it ended with a storyline that was never fully resolved.
