A major surprise at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards was Robert Aramayo winning Best Actor for his role in ‘I Swear.’ He also received the Rising Star award at the ceremony, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Everyone was raving about this actor’s performance, but honestly, going into the awards show, I figured Timothée Chalamet was going to win. He was the clear favorite, especially for his work in Marty Supreme, and a lot of people were predicting a win for him. It felt like the actor’s chances were slim, even with all the praise he’d gotten.
Aramayo seemed genuinely stunned when accepting the award. “I can’t believe this is happening,” he shared. “I truly didn’t expect to win—everyone else in the category is incredible.”
The victory was well-received by everyone, from the audience watching live – especially Aramayo’s overjoyed father – to viewers at home, who were deeply touched by the actor’s powerful performance in ‘I Swear’.
Kirk Jones wrote and directed the film, which stars Julio Aramayo as John Davidson, a real person who advocates for those with Tourette’s syndrome and also helped produce the movie.
Aramayo gives a wonderful performance in the lead role. The film portrays Tourette’s syndrome with compassion, humor, and genuine feeling, offering viewers a more accurate and empathetic understanding of a condition that is frequently misunderstood.
Aramayo admitted to TopMob, shortly after the film’s release last October, that he was completely unaware of John’s fame. He said it was only later he discovered how well-known John was, which he considered a positive thing. Aramayo also described the experience of working with John as deeply meaningful. He felt immediately that it was something he was meant to do, calling it an amazing, though challenging, opportunity. He knew he had to give it his all. If you haven’t seen the film and are interested in learning more about the condition it portrays – especially following recent events – or simply want to watch a moving and inspiring story, here’s where you can find it.

How to watch I Swear – is it streaming?
You know, even though “I Swear” first came out way back in October 2025, it’s still hanging in a few theaters thanks to all the awards buzz. Don’t expect to find it everywhere, though – screenings are pretty limited. I’d recommend checking your local cinema listings to see if it’s playing anywhere near you.
Right now, the easiest way to watch the film is to download it. You can rent or buy it from several streaming services like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play, with prices beginning at £3.49.
You might want to wait before spending any money, as there’s been a recent announcement about a new streaming account option.
Is I Swear coming to Netflix?
Great news! The day after receiving a BAFTA award, Netflix announced that the film would be available to stream very soon, on February 23rd.
You’ll be able to stream ‘I Swear’ on the platform throughout the UK and Ireland starting Tuesday, March 10th. It’s coming very soon!

I Swear review – Is the award-winning film worth watching?
In our review of TopMob, we gave the film three stars and generally praised it. You can read the complete review below.
John Davidson unexpectedly became a TV personality in the late 1980s. At age 16, a BBC documentary called John’s Not Mad followed him and his life with Tourette syndrome. Now, the show returns with Davidson, played by Robert Aramayo, in his 20s, as he navigates the challenges of adulthood. While the original documentary was uplifting and often included involuntary outbursts, this new portrayal explores a more complex story.
Despite facing continued criticism, he finds allies in a direct and empathetic mental health nurse, played by Maxine Peake, and a kind, fatherly caretaker boss, portrayed by Peter Mullan. Writer and director Kirk Jones expertly blends humor and heartfelt moments, always remaining sensitive to the serious nature of the story (with Davidson, now an advocate, serving as a consultant). However, the film occasionally veers into overly sentimental territory, which risks diminishing its impact.
Despite its flaws, the film is boosted by excellent performances, especially from Peake and Mullan, who are both at their best. However, the real standout is Aramayo, a rising star whose emotional depth drives the film and is likely to attract a large following, according to critic Terry Staunton.
I Swear cast – who stars alongside BAFTA winner Robert Aramayo?
Aramayo wasn’t the only cast member recognized at the BAFTA Film Awards. His co-star, Peter Mullan, was also nominated, for Best Supporting Actor, but Sean Penn from One Battle After Another ultimately won that award.
Lauren Evans, the film’s casting director, also received an award for her work. The film featured established stars like Maxine Peake and Shirley Henderson, and newcomer Scott Ellis Watson stood out in his portrayal of a young John Davidson.
