It can be surprisingly tricky to find the best way to watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, particularly with the recent release of Steel Ball Run (the seventh part) on Netflix.
With its rotating main characters, varying subtitle titles, and tendency to refresh its storyline every few seasons, it’s understandable why many viewers look for the best way to watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure – they want to make sure they don’t skip anything crucial.
Despite what you might have heard, this anime isn’t as complicated as people say. Understanding the series’ structure makes it easy to figure out the best way to watch it – and there’s a straightforward method to enjoy everything without getting lost or missing important plot points.
How to watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in order

If you’re trying to figure out the best way to watch the JoJo anime, I’d recommend going with the original release order. The official website breaks it down into six seasons. It starts with Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency as the first season, then continues with Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, Golden Wind, Stone Ocean, and most recently, Steel Ball Run. It’s a pretty straightforward way to experience the story as it was intended.
That means the canon JoJo order to watch is:
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean
- Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Do you have to watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in order?
You can enjoy each part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure without watching them all in order before Steel Ball Run, though watching them in order does help you understand the bigger picture.
I absolutely love how JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is structured! Each ‘part’ feels like its own self-contained story with a new family, a fresh location, and a unique problem to solve. It’s brilliant because you don’t need to have watched everything from the beginning to jump in and enjoy a specific arc. I think that’s a huge reason why JoJo has stayed popular with fans for so long – it’s easy to get into no matter when you discover it!
I’ve noticed that new viewers really enjoy Diamond is Unbreakable more if they’ve already watched Stardust Crusaders. That’s because Diamond is Unbreakable continues some of the storylines from Jotaro Kujo and Joseph Joestar, who were the main characters in Stardust Crusaders, so having that background helps a lot.

I’m really excited about Diamond is Unbreakable! The story mostly centers around Josuke Higashikata and his journey of discovering his Stand and learning what he can do with it. The best part is, you don’t need to have watched the previous parts to understand and enjoy it – it really stands on its own!

Just like you don’t have to see the earlier parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to enjoy Steel Ball Run, you can start with the new series on Netflix without watching any of the previous seasons if you prefer.
With Steel Ball Run, the anime continues its pattern of each season telling a self-contained story. More importantly, this new installment effectively restarts the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise, following creator Hirohiko Araki’s decision to reset the timeline in Stone Ocean.
You don’t need to know much about the previous parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to enjoy Steel Ball Run. It’s very accessible even if you’re new to the series.
I’m really excited about Steel Ball Run! Even though it feels like a fresh start with a different world, it’s still considered Part 7 of the JoJo anime. It’s amazing how they’re continuing the Joestar family’s story, even while exploring this alternate universe. It’s like a brand new chapter, but still totally connected to everything we love about JoJo!
I’ve noticed that while Steel Ball Run is a great entry point into JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, a lot of fans suggest watching the earlier seasons first. It seems like you’ll really appreciate everything JoJo’s has to offer if you experience the whole story in order.
